TAAL VOLCANOAGONCILLO, Batangas – Residents of three barangays here experienced throat irritation and observed sudden dry-out of vegetation that killed crops, plants, and trees after rainshowers as sulfur dioxide emission over Taal Volcano increased, the municipal agricultural office reported.
“This (occurrence) is unprecedented,” Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) Director Renato Solidum Jr. said although the residents are not advised to evacuate yet.
The Phivolcs advised the public Saturday, June 12, to take the necessary precautions, as high levels of SO2 emission have been observed in the Taal Volcano Main Crater in the past two days as measured by “campaign UV spectrometry” around the Taal Lake shore.
