It s no secret that many teams are now crafting their free-agency philosophies around the value of receiving potential compensatory selections in any given year. As you will read in this piece, there were some creative methods teams utilized this offseason to improve their chances of gaining a compensatory pick in 2022.
So, how do compensatory picks work?
The number of compensatory picks allotted each year is limited to the number of teams in the league (32), per the Collective Bargaining Agreement. However, compensatory picks are not divided equally among the teams, and no team can receive more than four compensatory picks in a single year. All eyes will be on what happens at the quarterback position. The Niners selected North Dakota State’s Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick, and the plan, for now, is to let him learn from veteran Jimmy Garoppolo.
San Francisco has one of the best rosters in the league. With a nucleus of George Kittle, Nick Bosa, Trent Williams and Fred Warner leading the charge, the Niners should be contenders again next season after an injury-riddled 2021 campaign.
General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan re-signed several of their own key free agents, including Williams, Kyle Juszczyk, K’Waun Williams and Jason Verrett. Lynch and Shanahan decided to make the trade that netted San Francisco the third overall pick after successfully retaining a bunch of their own veterans. The Niners also added former All-Pro center Alex Mack and pass rusher Samson Ebukam in free agency.

That starts soon, with the newest 49ers reporting to the team facility next week for rookie minicamp. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and his staff will start integrating them into the roster and 49ers schemes during that session, before they join veterans already in the offseason program.

The San Francisco 49ers 2020 NFL season was arguably the most disappointing season over the last decade purely due to the high expectations the team had set for itself by making the Super Bowl the season prior. The underwhelming season was primarily plagued with injuries in addition to holes on the roster that were neglected in the 2020 offseason.
However, the Niners started the 2021 offseason with an underrated free agency period during which they were able to retain most of their free agents, including Trent Williams, Jason Verrett, Kyle Juscyk, Jaquiski Tartt, and more while bringing in key role players in Alex Mack and Samson Ebukam. Even after this successful signing period, the 49ers needed more depth and starters at specific holes at quarterback, offensive line, cornerback, and safety, all of which they attempted to address during the Draft.
