Description
This is the first accurate topographical survey of Ankara, modern-day capital of Turkey, published by the T.C. Harita Genel MüdürlüÄü (Turkish Republic General Directorate of Maps) in 1924 (Åevval 1340). The map emerged from military surveys during the Turkish War of Independence (1919 - 1923), conducted between roughly 1921 - 1922. As such, it is an invaluable record of Ankara before it was developed into the national capital. Printed entirely in Ottoman Turkish, coverage extends from Hatip and Ãubuk Creeks in the north, to the Ankara-Erzurum Railway line and the German-constructed 1893 Ankara Train Station - then still well beyond the developed limits. Ankara Citadel appears on high ground just to the right of center. The map

Description
A striking and impressively proportioned cartographic curiosity this is a c. 1920 manuscript map of Florida and the Gulf Littoral as far as Texas. The image is surrounded by front and back-facing images of American Indians. Most likely this is the original art for an unpublished educational poster, as is exhibits a professional level of execution. The map is drawn in ink with color added using what appears to be colored pencil or pastels.
Sources - the Map The map is based upon the rare 1715 first edition of Nicolas De Fer s map of the southern part of North America,
La Riviere De Missisipi, et ses Environs. This is itself of great curiosity, as the 1715 De Fer is an entirely different map from the more common 1718 De Fer, and surviving examples are known in only 2 or 3 collections. The artist must have had access to one of the few surviving first editions to complete this map. Despite its rarity, the 1715 map is one of the most important early

Description
A rare and highly unusual 1886 bird s-eye view of Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island, Maine. This view was drawn and published to publicize the rebuilding of the Green Mountain Hotel (following a fire) and the inauguration of the Green Mountain Railroad - here visible at the summit of Cadillac Mountain. The view looks southwest on Bar Harbor from a hypothetical point somewhere above Sheep Porcupine Island. Bar Island appears in the lower right. From a convergence near the old ferry terminal, Bar Harbor s two main commercial arteries (then, as now), Main Street and West Street, radiate outward. Perspective has been exaggerated to emphasize the verticality of Cadillac Mountain, Champlain Mountain, and Eliot Mountain - the three peaks nearest to Bar Harbor. This unusual exaggeration of the vertical perspective also serves to uniquely emphasize the Green Mountain Hotel and Railroad, on the peak of Cadillac Mountain, which, although technically in

Description
A striking, cyan-toned railroad map of New York State issued in 1867 by Jonas Platt Goodsell. The map offers expansive coverage of New York, as well as some of the adjacent states, including all of Vermont, western Massachusetts and Connecticut, and northern Pennsylvania. This map was issued in Godsell s final year as State Engineer and Surveyor, and indeed the final year of his life.
New York RailroadsThe railroad system came to New York early, with some companies operating as early as the 1820s. Nonetheless, most of these focused on the Hudson Valley and westward towards coal reserves in Pennsylvania. The state mountains interior, including the Catskills and Adirondack Mountains, however proved a long-term challenge for railroad development. Nonetheless, by 1867, when this map was issued, a network of railroads and canals began to penetrate the state, reaching the Finger Lakes, ports on Lake Ontario, and Syracuse

This is an attractive 1970 map of Kathmandu, Nepal, issued by Suresh B. Malla. The map is printed on both sides. The recto details the city of Kathmandu and the verso the Kathmandu Valley. It was designed with the foreign tourist in mind and features a wealth of practical information of use to the traveler - locations of embassies, banks, grocers, hospitals, police, hotels, trekking companies, and more. On the verso, there are advertisements for Royal Nepal Airlines.
The City MapThe recto features a detailed map of Kathmandu - revealing just how small the city remained in 1970. The map gives evidence of Kathmandu s evolution from a traditional family courtyard or Chowk based civic design, to the incorporation of large avenues and a loose grid. On the left side of the map, there appears an illustrated guide to the city s many temples. At top, there is a street index. And, at bottom, advertisements for hotels, restaurants, and trekking companies.
