A striking, cyan-toned railroad map of New York State issued in 1867 by Jonas Platt Goodsell. The map offers expansive coverage of New York, as well as some of the adjacent states, including all of Vermont, western Massachusetts and Connecticut, and northern Pennsylvania. This map was issued in Godsell s final year as State Engineer and Surveyor, and indeed the final year of his life.
New York RailroadsThe railroad system came to New York early, with some companies operating as early as the 1820s. Nonetheless, most of these focused on the Hudson Valley and westward towards coal reserves in Pennsylvania. The state mountains interior, including the Catskills and Adirondack Mountains, however proved a long-term challenge for railroad development. Nonetheless, by 1867, when this map was issued, a network of railroads and canals began to penetrate the state, reaching the Finger Lakes, ports on Lake Ontario, and Syracuse

LEWISBURG Centre County Commissioner Mark Higgins was one of many state officials elected to the SEDA-Council of Governments during its Dec. 2 public meeting.
The 2021 SEDA-COG Board of Directors’ officers will be Juniata County Commissioner Mark Partner, president; Mifflin County Commissioner Kevin Kodish, first vice president; Centre County Commissioner Mark Higgins, second vice president; Larry Reisinger of Perry County, secretary; and Dennis Van Benthuysen of Snyder County, treasurer.
The 2020 officers were Columbia County Commissioner Rich Ridgway, president; Partner, first vice president; Kodish, second vice president; Reisinger, secretary; and Van Benthuysen, treasurer.
Partner said he anticipates serving as board president in the new year.

LEWISBURG Juniata County Commissioner Mark Partner has been elected as the SEDA-Council of Governments Board of Directors president and Mifflin County Commissioner Kevin Kodish has been named first vice president.
The election of officers took place at the Dec. 2 meeting.
Other officers include: Centre County Commissioner Mark Higgins, second vice president; Larry Reisinger of Perry County, secretary; and Dennis Van Benthuysen of Snyder County, treasurer.
