A Statham woman was arrested recently on a vehicular homicide charge stemming a wreck last September that claimed the life of a paramedic with National EMS in Athens.
A Winder woman died Monday of injuries she sustained in an April 26 car crash, according to a press release from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
The woman, Martha Wood, 72, was driving a Ford Edge on Atlanta Highway near Fowler Mill Road when she left her lane of travel, side-swiped another vehicle and collided head-on with a third vehicle, according to the release. Nobody else involved suffered serious injuries.
The accident was the 10th fatal crash in Athens-Clarke County in 2021, according to the release.
A Barrow County woman injured in a three-vehicle wreck April 26 died of her injuries Monday, according to Athens-Clarke police.
The wreck claimed the life of Martha Wood, 72, of Winder. Police said she was seriously injured in the crash and died at a hospital.
The wreck occurred about 1:50 p.m. on Atlanta Highway near Fowler Mill Road, where Wood, who was driving east in a Ford Edge, sideswiped a westbound Honda Civic, then collided head on with a westbound GMC Acadia, according to police.
The Honda driver was not injured, and the Acadia driver was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The slaying of an Athens man during a shooting May 2 on Georgia Highway 316 near Winder appears to be linked to gang violence, authorities said.
“In my opinion, it’s definitely gang-related and in retaliation from other things (in Athens),” Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said Friday.
The shooting claimed the life of 20-year-old Ketravian Tyvon Cole, a hip-hop artist in Athens who performed under the name EBE Montana. Cole, a passenger in a car, was shot about midnight and died at the scene.
Another man, Mark Anthony Thomas, 42, of Athens was wounded and transported to a nearby hospital. Two others in the Nissan Versa were unharmed, according to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office.
