Kieran Pearson was jailed for more than five years at the High Court in Edinburgh after admitting to carrying out the botched robbery in Dunfermline last year. His bid to hold up staff at the Spar store in the town’s Townhill Road backfired when owner Zaheer Uddin Babar grabbed the weapon and turned it on him.

Shopkeeper grabbed handgun from robber and marched him from store

Updated: April 14, 2021, 1:14 pm © D C Thomson & Co Ltd A fearless Fife shopkeeper turned the tables on a would-be thief by wrestling a handgun from him and marching him on to the street. Kieran Pearson’s bungled robbery attempt ended in humiliation as the store’s owner, Zaheer Uddin Babar, wrestled the imitation handgun from him. The 28-year-old escaped and police later discovered the gun was fake but found other items in Pearson’s home implicating him in the attempted robbery. Advocate depute Jane Farquharson QC told the High Court in Edinburgh on Wednesday Pearson was still on licence from a 2014 conviction for assault and robbery at the time he targeted Mr Babar’s store.
