you are in the cnn newsroom. i m paula reid in washington. jim acosta is off. a major move today in an attempt to halt a global banking crisis. switzerland s largest banking group ubs just agreed to buy its rival credit suisse in an emergency rescue bid. the purchase is aimed at halting investor panic brought on by two sudden u.s. bank failures this month. the deal comes after shares of the ailing bank lost 25% over the last week. even an emergency loan from the swiss national bank failed to stop the fallout. cnn reporter anna stewart will join us in just a moment, and cnn global economic analyst, rana foroohar joins us now. all right, rana, can you explain to us this deal? yeah, absolutely. so a little bit of con context. credit suisse has been a troubled bank for some time. so this, you know, this is a bank that over the last couple of years has had any number of crises. it s been considered weak in the marketplace. even late last year, it was having its own problems to
coast of florida. 155-mile-per-hour wind speeds. that s just two miles short of a category 5 hurricane. it s expected to make landfall about 100 miles south of here in the port charlotte area. rain 12 to 24 inches across much of the florida peninsula, challenge create freshwater flooding. the impact of this will be felt by millions in florida. already 200,000 people without power. that s before the storm even makes landfall. this will uproot people s lives. its a life-threatening storm. this is the sunshine skyway bridge that we have pictures of. you can see the winds kicking up. it will have an enormous impact. let s go to chad myers first at the weather center. the 11:00 a.m. advisory out now. what do you see? still see the 155-mile-per-hour eyewall winds. inside the eye it could be down to 5 or 10 in the middle, but we re working our way onshore. the eye is not onshore. the eyewall is coming onshore. this is what it looks like from space, this is called the visible image
we told him, the group that went over there outlined, you know, my belief in chances for success at this point. my belief was that it was very, very 5% to 10% is not a good optimistic outlook. the committee then showed how former president trump continued to embrace allegations of fraud, going against his white house lawyers, who told him that accusations were baseless were not substantial enough to make a difference in the election outcome. the justice department even told him there was no there-there as trump kept holding onto wild conspiracies. there were so many allegations, that when you gave him a very direct answer on one of them, he wouldn t fight us on it, but he would move to another allegation. he said there s lots of fraud going on here. we told him flat-out much of the information he s getting is false and/or just not supported by the evidence. we look at the allegations, but they don t pan out. so then former president trump had a choice. the committee s
deciding their vote. with numbers like that in mind, republican lawmakers are ramping up their attacks on biden s handling of the economy. has no idea how to deal with inflation, has no plan to deal with inflation. all he does is blame everybody else, including putin, for his inflation. even some democratic lawmakers are now urging the biden administration to do more. i support everything the president is doing, but i don t think it s enough. my constituents don t think it s enough. white house aides pushing back on accusations that the president isn t doing everything he can to lower prices. president biden gets up every day and goes to bed every night thinking about what can we do to get a lid on inflation. now, jake, today officials here at the white house are also noting that this is not just a united states problem. it s a global challenge when it comes to higher prices, higher gas prices. of course, they said they don t have anything to announce when it come
