Gathering much more on all of this for us. Shes joining me now from washington. What are you hearing now . Reporter kate, here is what we know. The white house has just released a statement revealing that additional government documents with Classified Markings have been found at President Bidens wilmington, home. And in a statement they described where these were found, two different locations. They said all but one of the documents were found in a Storage Space in President Bidens wilmington resident garage. One dpomt consisting of one page was discovered in an adjacent room. So what we have, we take a step back, we have we know ten pages of classified documents located in a former office here in washington, d. C. Back on november 2nd. We know some of the materials were top secret. They covered lightnings thick iran and the United Kingdom and ukraine. We are told that information was a close hold, but it spurred biden advisers to search other locations and here finding in two different locations additional documents with Classified Markings. Were told that he had a Rehoboth Home that has been searched and no documents have been found there. But the big question, one of many big questions, is, well, is this it . Are there potentially any other documents out there . And we dont know these classified documents what was in them and how many were there. So right now the next thing that is likely to happen is the attorney general, he is making a statement at 1 15. What will he say . We dont know. It is possible that he could tap a Special Counsel to take over this matter. It is also possible that he could announce an intermediate step. We know hes touted the u. S. Attorney in chicago to review that initial batch of documents found here in d. C. We were told by our sources that that review is completed. They didnt expect to take any additional investigative steps so it is possible that hell announce a extension of that review. At this point we dont know. But all eyes on the attorney general this afternoon and what he does with this new information. It is very true. Jeremy diamond is also joining us live at the white house. Jeremy, with he just heard President Biden, he faced some questions and answered some questions about this latest batch. Talk me through what you heard from the president because he did look like he was looking down at a prepared statement sometimes. He was certainly trying to read from a prepared statement that was very similar to both what he said in mexico city, a couple of days ago when the initial batch of documents was discovered, and also to the new Statement Today from the white house Special Counsel Richard Saber regarding these second documents. I want us to listen to what the president said talking about some of these documents being discovered in the garage of his wilmington, delaware, home. As i said earlier this week, people know i take classified documents and classified material seriously. I also said and were cooperating fully and completely with the Justice Department review. As part of that process, my lawyers reviewed other places where documents from my time as Vice President were stored and they finisherd the review last night. They discovered a small number of documents with Classified Markings in Storage Areas and File Cabinets in my home in my personal library. This was done in the case of the biden penn this is was done in the case of the biden penn center. The department of justice was immediately as was done, the department of justice was immediately notified. Reporter and it is not exactly clear what the security of some of the spaces were the documents were found. The statement from the white House Counsel rich saber said by all of the documents was found in a, kwskoet, Storage Place in the Wilmington Garage and another document discovered in an adjacent room. The president did point out that his garage is a locked garage. That is a point made and that doesnt mean that it is a appropriate place for classified documents to be held. But i point he wanted to make here. And this story is so much about the questions that remain unanswered even as the white house is attempting to provide some additional clarity today, is when these searches were conducted. They say that this review was finished, was completed, the review of these documents that were found was completed last night. But when exactly did these searches occur . Because we know that that initial search happened more than two months ago on november 2nd of that penn biden center. So did they immediately go and start searching those homes, did that happen only more recently. Those are some of the questions that we still need answers to. And again, this is comes on a day where the president was coming out to try to tout some good Economic News and instead hes faced with a spattering of questions about this very serious issue. Kate. Having to juggle it all and walk and chew gum at the same time becauses this is what the white house is facing. Paula reid is with me and i want to bring in former federal prosecutor jennifer rogers. Weve heard from paula and jeremy about what we know and dont know about the documents and what the administration is saying. What is your reaction to this later batch and in the latest news that were getting in . Well it is not great. They tapped the u. S. Attorney from chicago to decide as an initial step whether an investigation should be opened and it seems to me in what weve had reported before todays news that that was not likely to result in the opening of an investigation. But these are new facts. You have another location where classified documents were found. One of them may be not even in a locked container. So i think probably, i dont know what biden will what garland will do, but he may go back to the u. S. Attorney in chicago and ask him to review these facts anew and see if whatever recommendation he made about how to proceed, whether an investigation should follow, whether a special council should be appointed, whether those conclusions change based on what weve just learned. Absolutely. And jeremy, im seeing some new reporting from our colleague mj lee, there is a clarification on if we call it the chain of custody of who was notified when about where these documents were found . Yeah, in this new statement, they say that as in the previous case, they immediately notified the department of justice and provided the documents. They said they had notified the National Archives initially. A person familiar with the matte matter that, that is true. And now things have changed. The department of justice is conducting this preliminary investigation, this review of this situation and so they went directly to the department of justice in this case providing them the documents and that is one of the things that the white house officials want to make clear, is that they are being fully cooperative with the department of justice in this case. The white house hopes that is where it ends. They dont want to see a Special Counsel appointed into this matter. We do know that in previous cases whenever a Special Counsel is appointed you never know where they are ultimately going to end up with their investigation. They could start an investigation that could become fairly openended and end up in a completely different place. So that is certainly a scenario that this white house wants to avoid. But it is notable that they put out this Statement Today clarifying this situation with a second batch of documents. Clearly they were feeling the public pressure of the revelation of these documents which was reported yesterday by cnn as well as other outlets. But they wanted to theyre still they have a number of questions that they are not answering including why it took so long for us to even find out about this. We learned about this initially through reporting. White house then confirmed that they found this first batch of documents. Reporting revealed that a second batch was found. Now theyre again confirming here. So hopefully, for the white house, they are hoping that this puts a bow on it. But, again, weve seen before where when we think that they have addressed questions about all documents being found, it is not the case. So well see whether or not there is more still to unravel here. That is a good point. And paula, while you well note in the announcement of the Press Conference or the announcement that the attorney general is going to be making this afternoon, they dont give a topic. Is that standard for the attorney general. Kind of peel back the curtain a little bit. Because people will see this white house statement coming out and then nen announcement of the attorney general coming to speak and people are wondering is this to announce a Special Counsel which we do not have the reporting on that yet. It is standard for the Justice Department to release as few details as possible particularly about politically sensitive matters like this. We dont know ifez go he is goi announce a Special Counsel, it is unclear at this point. But there are some challenges if you wanted to appoint a Special Counsel. The list of people qualified is quite short and of that list the number of people who would want that assignment, particularly looking at what is happened to previous Special Counsels in this country political climate, is very, very short. But even if you could find someone, kate, with he know from our reporting that Special Counsel jack smith, he already has many of the key people that you would need for an investigation like this. Detailed to his office. Theyre already looking for office space. He has a lot of the resources and personal that this potential Special Counsel would need. So this is not an easy decision. It is not easy to find a Special Counsel but these facts and the Current Situation with someone already appointed who has the resources, incredibly complicated. It is fascinating to see what Garland Shares with us today. Jen, i promise you will not hold you to this when we do hear what the attorney general has to say, but we did hear from alberta gonzalez, during the Bush Administration this morning, and he said that he thinks, yes, a Special Counsel should be appointed. Do you think a Special Counsel will be appointed just knowing the universe of information that is out there, the political pressure that is now being applied. What do you think . It is really hard to say, kate. Ly say that the special Council Regulations say that only where a criminal investigation into an individual or a situation is warranted should a Special Counsel be appointed. So, if you take that literally and the u. S. Attorney in chicago decides that no full blown investigation is warranted, then Special Counsel should not be appointed. That said, Merrick Garland is very cautious on these matters so i wouldnt be surprised to see him appoint a Special Counsel. I think he would want to go back to the u. S. Attorney in Chicago First to see if the facts change this view before considering a Special Counsel because it is a big lift, as paula points out. Guys, thank you so much. Were now going to jump over to capitol hill. We are going to jump in, Kevin Mccarthy is holding the first News Conference since becoming speaker of the house. Lets listen. Well i find that the voters have elected George Santos. If there is a concern, he will go through ethics. If there is something that is found, he will be dealt with in that manner. But they have a voice in this process. Why not yes, maam. [ Inaudible Question ] what other ways will im glad you brought that up. I didnt mention the other thing we did. Passed a very bipartisan bill with 146 democrats joining with us to create a new select committee on china. The Congressman Gala her will chair. And ive met with leader Hakeem Jeffries on this. This will be a very bipartisan committee. Because i think it is very important, a number of reasons why i believe we have lost jobs to china, our intellectual property, because many times we dont speak with one voice from america. What im trying to accomplish is get members on both sides of the aisle from all different perspectives, not just from a military, but from financial and agriculture, to bring those jobs back to america, to make sure that china is not within side america buying our farm land and others. Get a level Playing Field for competition. We watched during covid for our medical supplies, them controlling 50 of the market. We watched from our medical pills and others what they control. This is something that is very not just disturbing to me, but for the future of america. I would say in this first five days is probably one of the most powerful things that we passed. The very bipartisan way a step forward, i would hope the senate would do it as well. And that we could speak with one voice as we move forward to bring the jobs back to america. Yes, sir. Is there is a lot of reporting and rumors about any addendums side deals that you made to get this speakership no. Do the American People deserve to all of the promises you might have made. They deserve to know. And look at the commitment to america. There is not a side deal to anything. You watch the rules package, exactly the same rules package we had back in january 1st. What does it do . The only change within that is make vacate the chair from five to one. The other thing that we did and im glad you keep bringing this up, we watch what is happening right now with the president of the united states. Not once, but now were finding in two different locations classified information just out there in the open. It just goes to prove, and were finding out now, after being sworn in, that this was discovered before the election. Another faux pas by the Biden Administration but treating law differently based upon your political beliefs. Treats one President Trump one way but treats President Biden a whole different way. That is why we had to provide a new entity from our churchstyle to look after the weaponization of what has gone on. That you want an equal playing of the law to all americans. Let him finish. Do you see this matter, regarding the classified documents found in President Bidens home going before that committee . It could. Here is an individual that has been in an office for more than 40 years and sat on 60 minutes that was so concerned about President Trumps documents locked in behind and now we find it just as the Vice President keeping it for years out in the open in different locations. I do not think any american believes that justice should not be equal to all and we found from this administration what happened before every single election, whatever comes out that they utilize to try to falsify it, they try to have different standards for their own beliefs, that doesnt work in america. Yes. Do you trust someone who has admitted to lying about major aspects of his past, could be facing Fraud Charges from brazil, to have access to top secret information. I dont see any way that hes going to have top secret if youre referring to goreorge santos. You apply the constitution equally to all americans. The voters of his district have aelected him. He is seated. He is part of the republican conference. There are concerns with it so he will go before ethics. If anything is found to have been wrong, he will be held accountable exactly as anybody else in this body would be. That is the fair way to handle anything and that is how ill deal with any single issue that ever comes forward. So do you have do you see a difference in that former President Trump denied repeated questions and President Bidens lawyers turned in documents after finding them . No, because from one stand point, they knew the documents were there. They actually asked President Trump to put another lock on them because they were locked. And you look at President Biden, wasnt president. It was right out in the open and he criticized President Trump and did he use the Justice Department to raid President Trump. Do you think that was right. They knew this happened to President Biden before the election and they kept it a secret from the American Public. Goes on 60 minutes criticizing President Trump and even knowing what he has done and he wasnt president at the time. Now we find another location that it is at. But he refused to answer the questions, his press secretary wont answer the questions. You watch them leak of photos sitting files of President Trump. Where is the photos of President Bidens documents. Where are Nthose Photos at. He knew this happened going into election and interviews. This is what makes america not trust their government. You couldnt have one form of law because someone has a different opinion than you and you cant use the Justice Department politically differen. And what im finding what is happening with President Biden time and again, you go from a laptop, saying not only that it wasnt true, but utilizing your own friends to go into companies to tell them to say the same thing, to try to knock down information, to try to make sure that the New York Post story couldnt be printed. You should be offended by that. You are of the press. You should be allowed to write even when you knew it was true. So pursue Entitledment Reform and if so would you be open to you whiching a higher taxes as part of those reforms. The one thing i know, eye watched when republicans were in power those eight years Discretionary Spending increases zero. I watched democrats take over for four years and they increased it by 30 . They went from 4 trillion to 7 trillion. I watch add 31 trillion debt and watched inflation grow under think fiscal policies. We have to get our house in order. I will tell you as republicans, we will always protect medicare and social security. We will protect that for the next generation going forward. But were going to scrutinize every single dollar spent. It is the right, it is the hard Working Taxpayer that actually pays it and we want to make sure it is spent wisely and now not the way democrats have spent. I want to ask, so there has been some interest among some of your rank and file republicans to possibly introduce a resolution to expunge one of former President Trumps impeachment or both. What do you think of that . Is that something that you would be supportive of . I have to look. When you look and find that the final information that the russia document was all a lie, when you watch what went through, i understand why members would want to bring that forward. Our First Priority is to get our economy back on track. Secure our borders. Make our streets safe again. Give parents the opportunity to have a say in their kids education but hold government accountable. A bunch of republicans, about 230 of nem last Congress Called on Speaker Pelosi to release the Security Footage of all things that happened on that day. Is that something that you would be interested in doing . Congressman gaetz said that you would be willing to do that. Is that true. I think the public should see what happened on that day. Ive watched what nancy pelosi did where she politicized it. Where for the first time in the history as a speaker not allowing the minority to appoint to a committee. To pick and choose. We watched the politicization of this. I think the American Public should see what happened in instead of a report written for a political basis and i think the answer were looking through that. I want to be very thoughtful but im engaged to to do that. On the debt ceiling, you could guarantee that republicans will provide what is necessary to raise the debt ceiling. We want to make sure and dont want to put any fiscal problems to our economy and we wont. But were fiscal problems would continuing to be doing business as usual. I remember when trump was president and nancy pelosi was speaker, they became a Debt Ceiling Agreement and it was a Cap Agreement for two years. To cap the spending and make those decisions. This is something that people have utilized. But i ask all of you and all americans, if you have a child and you give them a credit card, and they spend the limit, so youin crease the limit again and again, when does it end. Weve got to change the way we are spending money wastefully in this country and were going to make sure that happens. Paul, how are you . It is good to see you. Senator cornyn seems dismissive of the House Republicans plans for yesterday and some of the other republicans. What did he say . I dont have the exact quote on me. He seemed to think that what happens in the house but the senate needs to be bipartisan. What have you coordinated. That is interesting, Becauses In House here, we just had probably one of the biggest bipartisan votes to commit a select committee on china. Is the senate even in this week . What did they do this week . Oh, yeah. They havent done anything. So, i think the house has been very productive in the first five days. But, yes, i sat down with all of the republican senators and talked to them about ways they could be more productive. They didnt even pass a Appropriations Bill Last Year or ndaa. The ways that we Work Together would help them in the process to do that. What is your response to democrats who believe that you may have brokered some sort of deal with santos in order to to keep him in the house . I would say theyre wrong. What we saw the party move you on the rules package. Are you concerned that moderates will throw their weight around in the same we are one party. We dont have just one idea. But we go from the reagan filg, if we believe people 80 of the time were all together. I like a lot of party beliefs but we hava foundation of our beliefs. And i think what we went through last week will only make us stronger in the long run. Do you see you mentioned a budget Cap Agreement. Is that one of the things well i laid out from an example of what happened last night. When nancy pelosi was speaker, that is what transpired. To get a debt ceiling, they also got a cap on spending for next two years. Spending is ought of control here. There is no oversight and we cant continue around the same process. I had a very good conversation with the president when he called me and i would like to sit down with him early and work through these challenges. Yes, your question earlier, paul, the house is different. The American Public made a decision where they fired the democrats and they put us in charge. We put out a commitment to america to tell them exactly what we would do if they gave us the power. And in this first week, we continue to keep that commitment. We repealed 87,000 irs agents. We recreted a select committee on china to bring the jobs back. We continued to work for the going after accountability in this government. The church Style Committee of where we are going. We just stopped the raid of our of our Petroleum Reserve so it wont be sold to china any more. We continue to keep our promises and youll watch it week after week after week. Yes, maam. Are you concerned that the targets of potential subpoenas will use the argument that you used and mr. Jordan used to ignore the subpoena you got, that this is just political . No, because mine wasnt ignoring a subpoena. I said i would gladly go if we got to ape point people to committee. If was not, you will find the fundamental difference of me being a speaker and nancy pelosi. The other side will get to name their members on the committee. It wont be handpicked by me and denying the democrats their voice. So whatever transpires out of that committee is through republicans and democrats as we move forward. It is a fundamental difference. But that is not true with the Intelligence Committee either. Why. You said youll let democrats appoint i was very clear early on, let me phrase something very direct to you. If you got the briefing i got from the fbi, you wouldnt have swalwell on any committee. And youre going to tell me other democrats couldnt fill that slot. He cannot get a Security Clearance in the private sector. So would you like to give him a Government Clearance . You asked many he questions about santos. You asked a question about swalwell, not only was he getting a clearance, he was inside of an intel committee. He more information than the majority of all of the members. Did you ever raise that issue . No. Which you should have. You are going to tell me there are 200 other democrats that couldnt fill that slot but they kept him on it. The only way they knew it came forward is when they came to nominate them and the fbi came and told the leadership then, he has a problem and they kept him on. That jeopardized all of us. All right. Adam schiff openly lied to the American Public. So were listening to Kevin Mccarthy. Hes taking questions from reporters. A lot of questions from reporters. This is the first Weekly Press Conference as speaker. Lets talk about somewhat has been discussed already. Jeremy diamond is back with us. Hes at the white house. Jessica dean is on capitol hill. And cnn senior politically analyst Malika Anderson is here. And one might expect, hes talking about a lot of topics but what stuck out to you . Well what stuck out is that he clearly wants to talk about anything besides George Santos or any splinters in the Republican Party that we saw on full display in the last week or what were seeing with a lot of the hardliners getting the fruits of their labor where theyre getting assigned to the plum committee positions. He wanted to talk about over sight, about targeting the Biden Administration, he wants to talk investigations and things that he believes are good for republicans but George Santos is a major distraction up here right now. You heard him talking about how hes going to let that all go through the house ethics committee. The political reality is that they have this tiny majority of course. It is only four seats. If they do a Special Election for George Santoss seat, that could take his majority down to even three seats so hes not inclined to do that. But every day were getting more and more lies and inaccuracies who told us yesterday and repeated it today that he will not be resigning and he would resign if 142 people voted for him to resign. Were not sure what to make of that. That is a distraction and the other reality is that mccarthy will have to please a wide spectrum of republicans as he moves forward on things like the debt ceiling when he also talked about and that is a looming crisis here that we are probably barreling toward. Is how are they going to solve the Debt Ceiling Problem and get that fixed. That is going to be a problem very, very soon. Yep. Jeremy, one thing that we also heard, House Speaker was asked about it a couple of times, but also was very focused on what you and i were just discussing, the classified documents that have been found in President Bidens private residence and of course then at his private office. Mccarthy making the case, as weve heard from others, but making the case that he believes there is a double standard that has been applied. Yeah, he was. And he also made clear that the house under him is going to be looking into this. Going to be investigating this. Were already seen a number of letters including from the incoming House Oversight chairman james comber on this. The Intelligence Committee as well looking into this, questioning Damage Assessment from the intelligence commune i. But in terms of this claim of a double standard, there is no question that there are very serious issues at stake here with Classified Domcuments Foun in unsecure spaces stemming from him time as Vice President. But we also need to be clear that there are tremendous difference between what happened with former President Trump and what is happening right now with President Biden and that is if you look at the number of documents with President Trump, were looking at hundreds of documents in this case we know that ten documents were found in that initial batch, several more in the second batch. But beyond that, there is this issue of cooperation. And of potential questions of obstruction. Remember, that that search, that was carried out with a Search Warrant by fbi officials at maralago was only carried out months after there had been zpu discussed between trumps team and the National Archives over handing over documents and the department of justice only carried out that search after they discovered that more documents were still being held even after an initial batch was handed over and a trump attorney signed a statement saying all documents had been handed over. So there are a number ever significant differences and that is not to downplay the seriousness of what is happening with President Biden. But when Kevin Mccarthy, the speaker of house saying there is a double standard, what is really happening is that there are two different situations here with overlapping interests, Overl Overlapping issues. But different situations nonetheless. And two things could be true at once. And you laid that out clearly. Nia, you could see that is that the republicans are jumping on it. How big of a problem with the news were learning about President Biden and the documents being found in his wilmington home, how big of a problem do you see this becoming . Listen, democrats are frustrated that the Biden Administration and biden has handed republicans a political gift. You saw Kevin Mccarthy there laying out the way that republicans are going to approach this. They obviously are gooding to he their own oversight. Lindsey graham has called for a Special Counsel and well see if that happens when Merrick Garland talks today. And many believe a Special Counsel would be a good idea. Weve seen what happened with Special Counsels before, and you think about what happened to clinton, something that started with real estate and ended with Monica Lewinsky and a impeachment. Democrats think that so far biden has handled it in the best way he could. You saw him very much on script today in talking about it. But, listen, they are frustrated and a little nervous about what could happen and in some ways they say well maybe having the Special Counsel would sort of tamp things down and allow them to essentially say, listen, this is something that is happening with Special Counsel. But again, you dont know what happens if you get a Special Counsel eck poking somewhere an could begin somewhere and end up somewhere different and if youre a biden white house, that is a particular worry. Thanks for sticking around. I appreciate it. Thank you very much. There is also this. The man accused of killing four Idaho College students is back in court right now. The man accused of killing four University Of Idaho students is back in court this morning. Bryan kohberger faced four counts of firstdegree murder, he has yet to enter a plea. This is his second appearance in court since being extradited, you remember, from pennsylvania where he was first arrested. Jean casarez is watching this. What has happened in court. Very important. Weve jurt learned a date of june 26th is going to be the probable cause hearing. This is very important because this is where the prosecutor has to put on evidence to show exactly what they have and then if they have enough, the case would be bound over for trial. But the defense could crossexamine, we may learn more at this point we just have the affidavit. And yesterday i was speaking to a former fbi attorney, 20 years, he was with the fbi, he was the cofounder of the forensic genetic Genealogy Division of the fbi and i asked him, isnt there more than what is in this probable cause affidavit . I specifically asked him about dna at the scene. Very well could be. I dont know. It didnt indicate whether or not he was wearing gloves. It leads me to believe if they found dna on the button of the knife sheath that he was not wearing gloves. So in that case, very, very likely that he perhaps touched the door to get in and out of residence, the door to the other rooms. So it is things like this that we could expect at the probable cause hearing. One more thing today, no bond for the defendant. He will remain in custody. Remain behind bars. Okay, jean, thank you. Joining me now is cnn senior Law Enforcement analyst andrew mccabe. Hes the former Deputy Director of the fbi. Andy, this is one of those appearances in court where jean sums it up perfectly. He came in and they set a date and they went along. There is a lot to happen now between now and that probable cause hearing. I want to walk through a little bit of what we do know so far. Which is in that affidavit. The most notable pieces of evident from the probable cause affidavit, andy, one of things is Phone Records. Indicating that kohbergers phone was near the murder victims residence at least 12 times between june of 2022 to the time around the time of the arrest. How is that helpful . Well it is a fascinating factor us, kate, because this is really the only thing in the affidavit that even hints at a connection before the homicide between kohberger and these victims. We still dont have any sense of what his motivation might have been. How he became focused on this house and or these people. But the fact that he was in the area, his phone puts him in the area of the house on 12 occasions prior to the homicide is a pretty strong confirmation that long before the murders, he was already focused on this residence and like i said before, and or focused on the occupants of that house. So it is our first effort to build out what might have been happening in the lead up to the homicide. But then there is that knife sheath. Ive been curious to ask you, i dont fknow if you find it more or less important than the Phone Records. The knife sheath found on the bed next to one of the victims and dna testing linked to darn found in the trash at kohbergers parents home and linking the sheath to Bryan Kohberger himself. That seems pretty important . It is absolutely critical. It is by far most important piece of evidence in this case so far. Even with, assume you had all of the Phone Records and puts him in the area and shows him moving back and forth between his residence and the Homicide Scene on the night of the murders, none of that actually puts him in the house. The dna puts him not just in the house, but in literally in the bed where two victims were found. So it is absolutely the most critical piece of evidence. It is possible that that dna got placed on the button of the knife sheath before the homicide, maybe as he was p picking up his things before he put his gloves on. But it gives you a piece of dna if he was smart enough to wear gloves during the commission of the crime. So then of course, it is is the familiar dna recovered from the garbage by the parents house that gives us a good identification that the dna belongs in fact to croweberger. What do you think at the moment, but what is the biggest outstanding question that the defense could exploit to push back on some of this evidence that weve just laid out . You know, what we know so far, which im sure is far less than what the investigators know, it already presents a pretty damning case. The first hurdle as weve just been talking about is putting the defendant at the scene of the crime, the dna clearly does that. Then you have all of the other supporting information about the vehicle, the vehicle on surveillance, the movement of his cell phone and the period before the homicide and then of course the absence of his cell phone pinging the towers during homicide but shows up the next morning before the crime is even reported to the police. All of that stuff is, i think, very persuasive. It is likely that the investigators have collected additional evidence after the arrest because theyve executed Search Warrants at his residence and his parents residence and in the car. And i think the thing were looking for is whether any of the Search Warrants, maybe on Electronic Devices or email accounts, conclusively show us how and why he began targeting those poor people. Right. So much to learn. Really appreciate it. Now we have a probable cause hearing that they have set the date for you. Good to see you. Thank you. So we have new data showing inflation is slowing for a sixth straight month. What does that mean for the feds next decision on raising Interest Rates. President biden today touting progress being made with the economy after this mornings release of an important measure of inflation, showing that it is slowing for a sixth straight month. Let me bring in matt egan, looking at the numbers, at the data, trying to work through the complicated picture. What do you see . Theres no doubt about it, inflation is cooling off. The fed seems to be having real success putting this fire out. Consumer prices up 6. 5 yearoveryear is not healthy, but everything is relative. That is the lowest reading since the fall of 21. Monthovermonth, prices dropped. We havent seen that since the spring of 2020. Lets look at where prices are cooling off the most. Gas prices down, thats huge. Used cars dropping significantly. Televisions also down. Inflation is still hot in other places. Shelter, 7 more expensive. Thats a huge part of peoples budgets. Food, of course, is very high. And everyone is talking about egg prices, up 60 . The last time we saw that was in 1973 when Richard Nixon was in the white house. Another reminder of while gas inflation is cooling off, it is too early to declare victory. And too early to say the fed is done with their work. Exactly. They still have a bit more work to do. Thank you so much. Lets get more perspective. Broing me is the director of the white house council. Good to have you. We keep hearing that one data point does not make a trend. We talk about that all the time when it comes to the economy. This shows inflation has slowed for six straight months. Is this a trend and do you think this means the country can achieve a soft landing . Its good news and certainly encouraging of the trend that we are hoping to see. One thing about this data point, it gives us the end of the year. As you say, you never want to put too much emphasis on one month but lets look at the Fourth Quarter of last year. We saw that Headline Inflation on an annualized basis was low 2 , 1. 8 , and a lot of that is goods prices. Thats good news for american families, saving about 180 a month for a typical family. If you strip out gas prices and food prices and look at core inflation, in the Fourth Quarter that was 3 . Thats down from more than 11 at the beginning of 2022. So were seeing that kind of moderation that we want to see, and importantly, we saw it in the context of a quarter where our labor market remained resilient. We hit the lowest Unemployment Rate in 50 years in this country, and real wages, workers are seeing real wage increases. Thats been true for the last six months as well. So certainly encouraging. We have more work to do, thats for sure. One of the important parts on the policy side is that some of the most important policy we worked to pass and enact last year, the biggest impact, whether thats infrastructure, investment in manufacturing, or lowering costs of energy and Prescription Drug prices, is going to kick in in the first half of 2023. Brian, what is going on with the price of eggs . Thats one thing that definitely is sticking out and has a lot of people talking. Yes, im glad you raised that. Actually, Food Inflation this month cooled overall and was the smallest increase in a couple of years. Driving that was this issue of eggs. Thats driven by an outbreak of the avian flu. So we have to deal with that. These things happen and certainly we want to take that seriously and do what we can to try to bring the price of eggs down. But the underlying Food Inflation is cooling, so thats good news for people at the Grocery Store. Eggs, were going to have to work on. The avian flu is something that we cant control, but we need to work to address, while looking at the overall basket of food. The good news is compared to six months ago, gas prices are down and the increases people are seeing at the Grocery Store are coming down as well. I know you dont like to guess or suggest what the fed should do but this is the last cpi report before the feds next Interest Rate decision. Do you think the fed is almost done raising Interest Rates . As you anticipated, theyre independent and i will neither guess or suggest what they should do. From our perspective, the president has been talking about what were hoping to see. He talks about it as a transition to steady, stable growth. That involves inflation coming down, while seeing resilience for American Consumers and in the labor market as well. Certainly the data for the last quarter of the last year, the data weve seen over the course of the last couple of months is encouraging in that respect. Its going to double our resolve on Fiscal Policy and implementing measures to keep bringing prices down and keep the drivers of longterm growth we know are so important for this economy, investment in r d, bringing jobs here in the united states. We are in a position where we can drive that longterm economic benefit to position our economy to be better, more competitive in the future as well. Brian, before you go, the white House Counsel confirmed today more classified documents were found at the president s home in wilmington, delaware. This very clearly is not an area where you are focused on or your area of expertise, but any big thing that happens within a white house impacts how the white house operates and can impact a lot of things at the white house. As this continues to develop, is this becoming a distraction from the work that you are trying to do . Absolutely not. The president spoke to this issue, the white House Counsel spoke to this issue. Our focus, the economic teams focus is going to be on continuing progress weve made and today is a good, positive development on the economic side, but will increase our resolve to do the work we need to do on behalf of the American People to bring prices down, keep the economic recovery going. Appreciate your time, brian. Thank you very much. So as we were just discussing, i was just asking brian, the white house did Confirm Today is second batch of Class Fight Documents were found at President Bidens home in wilmington, delaware. We heard House Speaker Kevin Mccarthy this hour speaking up and calling for a probe into that matter. And while not disclosing the subject, attorney general Merrick Garland will be making a statement at the Justice Department at 1 15 p. M. Eastern time this afternoon. Joining me right now to talk about this and also some real developments in ukraine is a top democrat on the House Armed Services committee, congressman adam smith. Good to see you. Thank you for being here. You now have this new information from the white house, the second batch of classified government records not where they should be, not handled as they should. And although biden and trump appear to be handling the discovery of documents differently, there are obvious echoes of the trump investigation. Whats your reaction to what youre learning from President Biden . Well, theres two things. First of all, both the documents that were discovered at maralago and the documents that have been discovered in the two places with President Biden need to be investigated. The Justice Department needs to look and see how did they get there, who brought them there, what was the purpose, was it inadvertent or intentional. But theres one very big distinction here. When President Bidens team found these documents in the two locations, they voluntarily immediately turned them over to the appropriate authorities. President trump took the position that he didnt have to, he took the position that he was basically above the law. He wanted to keep the documents and so he would. And the Justice Department and others negotiated with him for well over a year to try and get him to do what President Biden did immediately, turn the documents back over to the appropriate authorities, and he refused to do that. So they executed a Search Warrant. So that is the very large difference between these two situations. But both are serious and both need to be investigated. Do you think a Special Counsel should be appointed with this . Im not sure on that. I think that might be helpful just to eliminate any sort of appearance of conflicts. President biden is still in office, he has appointed the attorney general and several Justice Department people to look at the question of how did these documents wind up in a place where they shouldnt be. That does need to be investigated, those questions need to be answered and it is possible that a Special Counsel might be in the best position to do that. That would be perfectly fine. I dont think Congress Needs to launch an investigation on this. We certainly didnt do that in President Trumps case. The Justice Department took care of it and they should. I want to turn to ukraine right now. The russian government Just Announced that yet another Just Announced yet another change in commanders leading their war effort. This wellknown general, i believe you and i have discussed him before, gerasimov. Military experts seem a bit perplexed, describing this as something of a mystery that this move is happening in this moment. What do you think it indicates . I think it indicates desperation on behalf of President Putin and russia. The invasion of ukraine is not going the way they want it to. They are facing an embarrassing defeat. And President Putin is still unwilling to abandon his goal of basically eliminating a sovereign ukraine. And thats the key to getting to peace here, is for russia and putin to realize they are not going to take over ukraine, and to be willing actually to negotiate an end to the conflict. But putin is flailing about, hoping his initial dream of s taking ukraine, he clings to that and hes flailing about trying to figure out how to make it happen when its clear that it wont. I think thats what it indicates right now. Defense spending has been a big topic over the last week as we were watching the speaker Fight Play Out and negotiations going on behind the scenes. We dont know the full picture, but there are promises of budget cuts. He was speaking about it in his First Press Conference today. Some of the discussion has also been that they could include cuts to defense spending. Where do you think this is headed . Are you worried . Yeah, i am worried. Theres two things. One, we should have a robust discussion about the Fiscal Health of this country. We are borrowing a large amount of money. Economists will argue thats okay, that we can make it work, and we have for quite some time. But we should have a discussion about how much money we spend. That should be a whole discussion. Were only talking about the discretionary portion of the budget, which is 1. 7 trillion out of a more than 6 trillion budget. And then also revenue matters, how much taxes are you bringing in in order to pay for all of this. We should have that discussion. The real worry is the approach that the rad dal maga extremists want to take and that mccarthy is willing to go along with, which is to shut down the government and not pass any appropriations bills, to not pass a cr and not raise the debt ceiling, putting us into a real fiscal crisis. That we should not do. And i am very worried that is exactly what Speaker Mccarthy is going to allow to happen over the course of the next 10 to 11 months. We should have a debate about the Fiscal Policy, absolutely. We shouldnt be shutting down the government or refusing to pay our debts. I was about to call you mr. Chairman again. Its a transition for me. Congressman, thank you so much for coming on. I really appreciate your time, as always. Can you. Thank you all so much for watching. Im kate bolduan.
