And in ukraine, ukraine racking up more battlefield devastation. That is what were watching at this hour. The search for survivors in florida, rescuers going doortodoor in neighborhoods decimated by Hurricane Ian still nearly 2,000 have been rescued so far an the death toll from this Monster Storm Jumping to more than 100 people now. More than half of the deaths are in one county alone, lee county. The sheriff there is about to hold a Press Conference. Were going to bring you that live when it begins, when it happens. There is so much tragedy from this storm. Weve seen this for days now. But were also hearing incredible stories of survival. A fort myers man who clung to a palm tree for hours as the storm surge flooded everything in site. His daughter fearing the worst after their last desperate phone call. Theyre now reunited and they will join us this hour. Lets get started with the very latest on the recovery. Boris sanchez is live in fort myers. In this Press Conference about to begin, what are we expected to hear . Zbl reporter well, we are expecting an update from the sheriff of lee county on the death toll and the question that they couldnt answer for us yesterday, how many people remain missing. Obviously it is a delicate operation here in lee county, specifically in Fort Myers Beach which the sheriff announced was closed off even to residents in part because this Search And Rescue efforts is slowly transitioning into a search and recovery effort. The sheriff revealed to us that his team is encountering some morbid scenes as they begin to move debris and comb through the wreckage. They are discovered cadaver and that is why you see the death toll climbing the way that it has. More than 100 fatalities here in the state of florida. The sheriff yesterday saying they simply dont know exactly how many people are still missing out there. Here was his response, what he shared with cnn during yesterdays Press Briefing when i posed that question to him. It doesnt seem like we have that sound bite unfortunately, kate, be well be hearing from the sheriff. I confirm and i sea him hes on site and the podium is set up. As you hear what appears to be a Military Helicopter over us. This is not far from Fort Myers Beach where we do not have access where the crews are working day and night to look for any sign of life and as could you tell, this is a marina that takes up a pretty sizable amount of roadway and it was completely decimated. There are some unhoused folks that have been seeking shelter here. Many of them had homes not far from this marina that were destroyed by the hurricane. There are businesses here that were destroyed. You could see perhaps some of the ships that got lifted by the storm surge out of the marina and into the street. Clearly an area that has suffered significantly because of Hurricane Ian. As this Press Briefing is set to begin, well be asking the sheriff the latest numbers. Not only on the death toll but trying to get our heads around how many people still out there have loved ones that theyre not aware of their whereabouts, that they dont know where they are. Again that Press Briefing set to start any minute, kate. And youre right there for us. Thank you so much. Well be back to you. So as boris is talking about the search for survivors, it is growing more urgent by the day. Six days later it is unclear how many people are still missing and that is a key question right now. Cnns nadia romero is live in englewood with more on those efforts. What are you learning. Reporter what is so difficult for many people because Cell Phone Service was down for many days and still it is hard to get into contact with people in the Barrier Islands and those who evacuated, they still have friends and family they havent heard from. So that question that boris asked the sheriff there in lee county, how many people are unaccounted for, that is a big question. When you talk to people and go throughout community to community, they tell you about people that they just havent heard from. Their looking for a phone call, a text message, a social media post to let them know that their friend or Family Member is still alive. And because of that, so many people here in Charlotte County tell me that theyre happy that they survived Hurricane Ian. But know they have to survive the aftermath. That is why this area is so important. This is one of the largest Distribution Sites weve seen in all of southwest florida. It is been run by the National Guard. And people need basics. So in these boxes right here are tarps. This is the first time weve seen tarps out at the Distribution Sites because people have big holes missing from their homes either the walls or the roofs. So tarps were requested by so many people. Now theyre available. And of course water. People need that as well. You have these mres and also have ice. This is the hottest commodity that everyone is looking for, bags of ice. Kate. It is so heartwarming in the face of tragedy to see the National Guard behind you helping out. Thank you so much. So floridas Health Care System in the hurricane ravaged areas remains a big concern. Several hospitals flooded or sustained real damage from the storm. Health care staff are doing the best of course in the aftermath but struggling understandably to provide care. Dr. Tara narula joins me with more on this. How are hospitals coping or what they are up against still this many days later . It is extremely difficult. And when your Public Health systems and hospitals become de stabilized, it is the feeling in the whole community it is compounding. Exactly. You expect those places to be stability and anchors. Over the weekend hospitals worked to restore water supply and transfer patients over all about 7,000 patients have been moved or transferred or evacuated from 150 Health Care Facilities. We know that 65 of Health Care Facilities are now back up an running. And when you look at why this is happening, so we know that certainly there was some hospitals that sustained damage, but freestanding Emergency Rooms may have been damaged and that adds to the burden in Emergency Rooms and hospitals and hospitals are looking to discharge patients but it is a problem when you cant send patients to a Nursing Facility or their home or even staffing issues, they lack transportation to get to the hospital or theyve lost their homes. The entire chain of exactly. Of everything is totally disrupts. That is right. It is exactly what youre going to see in a tragedy like this when it is so decimated. Thank you so much. Really appreciate it. So joining me now with more is jay budish. The city manager of naples, florida. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us. We were just talking with correspondents about the questions of missing and rescues and in some of the hardest hit areas from the hurricane. We know that Search And Rescue operation are underway in southwest florida. What is the status of that in naples . Well, were happy to say that we have had a chance to inspect every single structure that had significant damage and some that were completely destroyed. We did conduct a number of rescues the day of the storm at its peak and were able to get to everyone who called for help. At this point we dont have any confirmed fatalities within the city. But we have not had a chance to talk to everyone at this point. Do you have a sense yet of do you have a sense yet of how many People Living in your city arent going to be able to get back into their homes, to return to their homes . Um, it is a great question. Were still trying to ascertain a more finite number. But based on our visual observations and the fact that we received eight to nine feet of surge and knowing the elevation here in naples, there was a significant amount of homes and in fact an entire neighborhood was submerged with three feet of water. Some areas got six to seven feet of water. I would guess it is probably hundreds of households that are going to be experiencing a period of time when theyre not going to be able to be in their homes. You have estimated that damages in naples could be more than 1. 5 billion. What does that include . So, the Damage Assessment that we completed was mostly external visual observation and that equated to about 700 million. What it didnt include were all of the submerged vehicles, all of the interior damage, furniture, carpet city manager im going to jump in. Were going to jump over to lee county, fort myers for an update there. We have a hundred calls for service that were holding. Welfare checks and call to 911. All of the stuff that we could not get to during this catastrophic event and today we are back to the normal flow of traffic, not holding calls because of my fellow Brothers And Sisters in lawsuit from Law Enforcement that have cop to help us. And they are alpha bravo. That means we work 12 hour shifts and they dont get to go home to their Family Members. They stay ready and able at the press of a button to go to work. And before the storm, were alpha bravos and during and still today we are on alpha bravo shifts. We worry about burnout and a Relief Factor so were going to utilize our local, state and federal partyers to make sure we have the sufficient man power who relieve those that have been working straight around the clock. The National Guard has helped us tremendous. Tremendously with security and safety of our roadways. My fellow Family Members from all over the state has sent Councilless Assets to help us from the florida sheriffs association, the fish and wildlife, florida highway patrol, our state troopers, fdle, fire and ems from all over the country. It is all hands on deck, folks. I want to thank the residents of lee county. The great residents. And i have to tell you, as we stand herek people are pulling up. We took such a catastrophic hit. But Everyone Wants to help. It is heartwarming because in minutes and hours a lot of people had their lives washed away. Breaking down the districts, lee county as a whole is 1260 square miles. Our south district, we have extreme damage in bonita beach. And want to keep people off the roadways and bridges for their safety. Again bridge compromised were looking at lovers key and Sickory Island and working on temporary repairs with restrictions to that bridge. As sit here in Fort Myers Beach ground zero, i look there is an 80 foot boat that is thrown like it is nothing. The beach area is still closed. You saw the urban Search And Rescue teams are working in conjunction with all of us to do very strict threephase rescue and recovery. Okay. Phase one is an initial search for life. People that are in immediate danger. Yelling for help that might have stayed, yelling for hem because theyre injured. Phase two is a a followup search and more in detail. Sometimes it is very difficult to identify a property. There is no more Property Lines or sometimes no buildings or homes so were going back for the phase two to really identify a property, possibly who the owner is, and if there were People In Need and the Accountability Side of that. And in phase three, it is very, very detailed. Which is a complete evaluation about structures. If there is a structure still standing, has it been compromised. Using the cadaver dogs to go in to sniff out possibly if there is anyone there or deceased. It is going to be time, folks and i need patient and i need residents to understand, which they have, while their lives have been wash add add washe away, my team and Family Members are committed at every level. I have to praise Governor Desantis and his team. Governor desantis has been amazing. He has constantly phoned me, what do we need, sheriff. What are the updates . They give us everything that we need at every level to do our job. I want to talk about sanibel and capt uefa and the Barrier Islands. Sanibel is accessible by boat but it is restricted access to approved contractors and residents. Multiple barges are being utilized to transport, goods and water and machinery and equipment to the island. And were working as we speak for a temporary Ferry Service to assist the residents and we know people want to get back and see their homes and if they have a home and they want to grab a photo album. Things that could not be replaced by insurance or money. We want to give people when it is safe, the first second it is safe, the chance to do that. The Department Of Transportation and the Army Corps Of Engineers are assessing the Sanibel Causeway as we speak. And once again i cant thank ow great Governor Ron Desantis who has committed to getting us a new bridge completed asap. We have over 100 National Guardsmen deployed over sanibel and captiva. Now we look to pine island. Equally hit as hard. And as of yesterday, with the governors assistance, the Department Of Transportation is working on a temporary bridge, theyre delivering tons of gravel, as we speak starting yesterday, and possibly could have a temporary bridge in place well were listen to the sheriff of lee county giving an update on he said the search and Recovery Efforts and listing out the phases of search and recovery that are still underway in that hardhit county. Hes in ground zero of this disaster. Fort myers beach also saying that theyre working to get a temporary Ferry Service to Sanibel Island so residents could get some of their bebelongings before they have t leave again. Much more to come on the rescue, recovery of Hurricane Ian throughout thehow. Well be right back. Will ripley is live in taiwan with more on this. U. S. And south korean leaders with speaking out about this. What happened . Reporter well, what happened is that north koreans have done something that theyve done before but never to this extreme. They flew this missile farther than theyve flown in previous t tests. So not only over japan for the first time in five years but they demonstrated a striking range that is 700 miles farther away that the u. S. Territory of guam. If they pointed this thing in a different direction, it could easily hit that crucial u. S. Military point. And that is certainly alarming because the north koreans have threatened guam in the past. And now theyve demonstrated they have a missile capable of hitting not just that location but a lot of other streetic locations around the region. This is a time when analysts say we could expect to see more prevaukive behavior from kim jongun now that hes past the worst of pandemic. Now he feels emboldened because the world is look the at ukraine and dont be surprised if we see more in the months to come. A real Roller Coaster in this region which could include a nuclear test, first since 2017 and missiles launched from submarines and more provocative launches like the one that startled so many people in japan today that got ahertz on their phones and heard air raid sirens. I want to turn now to the war in ukraine. The ukraine army is reclaiming more land across the south and east. This morning Ukraine Forces pushed into the luhansk region. Nick payton walsh is live with the latest. A new defiant statement as well from president zelenskyy . Reporter yeah and hes saying that he will not negotiate with russian president vladimir putin. That is not with russia ever, but the man whose War Of Choice has been tearing through the last few months. News is tartling in ukraines favor. After their advance around kharkiv a month ago, theyre now pushing through in the eastern direction. We were in the town of lyman and today were hearing their pushing very fast in the south, not far from where im standing here. And while the Ukrainian Military is cagey about what it will admit to, theyve taken one town which was a scene the battles over, now it appears ukraine is moving pretty fast. The reason this is important is that the southern offensive is economically important to putins presence strategically, too, and there are a lot of Russian Forces trapped on the other side of a river called the dnipro on the western side. They could get out in small numbers but theyve been there for a while under great pressure with little resupply and so the progress could turn into another route. All of this with the weird surreal back drop of Moscow Continuing To Rubber Stamp the decision by russia to declared the occupied parts of ukraine as part of russia. It is very hard to get your head around that moscow is saying this while losing so incredibly fast but that is where we are right now with many concerns about the continued kremlin slight threat they may resort to greater force. A surreal back drop for sure. Thank you. Joining me for more is phil rasmusine, the former Prime Minister of denmark. Thank you so much for coming in. I want to start about what nick was talking about which was president zelenskyy Signing A Decree Ruling out the possibility of negotiating with putin. He called it a impossibility of negotiations with him. Do you think that is the right call to be making right now . Yeah, actually, i support this declaration from president zelenskyy. It is incomprehensible to imagine a Peace Settlement on those conditions, demanded by russia. We have one thing to do, to deliver all of the weapons to ukraine so that they could win this war. They have the will to fight. It is our obligation to give them the means to fight. On putins formalizing the annexation today, or trying to. You have said that nato did not respond strongly enough when putin illegally annexed crimea eight years ago. You were head of nato during that time. You could talk about what you think nato leaders should take from that, the lesson they should learn behind that and what was behind the reluctance then that they should learn from now. The most important lesson to be learned is that appeasement with dictators does not lead to peace. It leads to war and conflict. And the illegal Annexation Of Crimea is a example of that. If we have reacted much more determined back then then we might have avoided the new invasion of ukraine now. So, what we have to do in the shortterm is to deliver all of the weapons to ukraine that they need to win this war but we should also ensure that such an invasion could never, ever happen again. And that come with something i want to ask you about in a second which is your Security Compact that you have proposed. But before we get there, nob other than elon musk is now proposing what he thinks is a path to peace and ukrainian leaders are responding to it. What hes put out there is allowing for the u. N. Supervised elections in the newly annexed regions formally making crimea part of russia and also p promising that ukraine remains neutral. Ukrainian leaders did not take kindly to that suggestion. But what do you make of this coming from elon musk . Yeah, i was very surprised. And i think it is a bit it is a bit naive. If we accept that a country like russia could just grasp land by force, then we send a very dangerous signal to autocrats across the world. It would be a signal to the chinese leaders that they could just invade taiwan without any costs. So i think we should refrain from putting pressure on president zelenskyy and his government to accept a bad peace deal and give concessions. There is one outcome of this war and it is all Russian Troops must leave ukraine soil. And youve also, to your Security Compact that wyouve proposed, it is about the longterm commitment to ukraines selfdefense, being able to support them, allies in committing to their selfdefense. What is your message to the Biden Administration on that because there is a reluctance, a consideration of what they send in because they dont want to be seen as a direct party to this conflict. First of all, im In Washington, d. C. Right now to thank the administration for incredible delivery of weapons to ukraine and it is not least thanks to the delivery of highly sophisticated weapons from the u. S. That we are now seeing that the ukrainians making such progress on the ground. However, in order to have to ensure that this can never happen again, and this is a reason why a group of International Experts have provided recommendations to president zelenskyy to guarantee the security of ukraine in the future. And the best security would be to make ukraine capable to with stand any russian attack by ensuring that they have such Strong Military that they can match the russians, that they enhance intelligence cooperation between ukraine and partners. That we conduct joint exercises and training of Ukraine Forces and we build a very strong Ukrainian Defense industry. That is the best Security Guarantee we could give the ukrainians. Finding out this family history, these things become anchors for your soul. Well the people of florida are starting to pick up the pieces in the wake of Hurricane Ian and were learning stories of survival. And our next guest is one them. Stan pence, he lived in fort myers and when the storm hit he was trapped. As the hours went by, it ome got worse for stan. The last thing that his daughter stephanie heard him say on the phone was i think im going to drown. For 20 hours, his family did not know what happened to him. If he was okay. And if he was even alive. Well now stan and stephanie, they are reunited. Stan pence and his daughter Stephanie Downing joining us now. Stan, i have to say reading about what you lived through gave me chills and my producer as well. After you said that to your daughter on the phone, could you tell us what happened . Um, i just said i was going to drown and then we lost connection. And i just said i was able to look outside because the glass pane was on side, i was able to get out. And at that point i knew hi to get out because i already had about two feet left of looking out over the roof and i just jumped out and started swimming. And i was trying to get to the other building that was the second floor and i didnt make it. I got swished away and i went around the building and i was able to find some bushes and i grabbed on to it all and i pulld myself in and i just stayed there for hours. Hours. With the wind blowing and the Water Gushing over my head. It was just a long time. And then the wind shifted back, so it started, the surge was the other way so it was starting to get lower. So i dont know how many hours it was, but i was able to get down and get across, get to the building, get up to the second floor, found myself a spot where it was where the wind wasnt and the rain and i got into a corner and i stayed there all night. Stan, what was going through your mind as you were spending hours clinging to a palm tree or a bush. Just alone clinging to this. What was going through your mind . Everything. Just my kids. You know, and how long this is going on for so long. Because it just kept going and going. It wouldnt stop. It just i was just thinking about my kids and my grandkids. And just everybody i know. You know, they just kept me going in my mind. Stephanie, what was going on your mind this whole time . Um, i went through every scenario imaginable. It was okay, he got out. And okay he got out and got to the second floor. And then it was oh, gosh did he even get out. Because i didnt know that he was able to get out of the building yet. We had a radio that was listening to all night just trying to hear anything about what was going on down in fort myers. So then when they did say, they talked about his condo place and they said hopefully no one was in these and i just looked at my husband and i was like, i think my dad may by gone. And it was terrifying. And i didnt even get to talk to my sister about it. I sent her the last screen shot that we have of Text Messaging and the next day i saw my sister and we just cried because we truly thought he was gone. Oh, my god. 20 hours before you were able to reconnect. You could just describe that moment when you were able to be reunited once again . Well, first we got wifi back and someone messaged me and said im here with your dad. And i read it out loud to my sister and my sister fell down and she was just hysterical and i fell back into a chair and im look oh, my gosh. He made it. How . You know, so, my sister and her husband, they have a big truck and so we didnt know flooding and what the roads were going to look like because were an hour aw away and so they drove down and got him and my sister ran through the water at him and found him at his place. When she drove him back, i was able to see him and i walked in and my stepdad said to my kids, Someone Special is here. And i saw my dad and the back of hi head sitting on the couch and i just was like, oh, my gosh. I laid my head on his chest and i said, hey, michael phelps, you had a nice swim. As only a daughter could say to her father. I could say that i would say to my dad. And get away with it. Exactly. And i have to say, tears are coming to my eyes seeing your smiles. It is just i could see there is clearly so much to be thankful for. Stan, your a live and back with your family. But the reality is you also, youve lost everything else. I mean, is it kind of how is it all kind of settling in on you and what is your home look l like and what does life look like right now. I lost everything that i was in there. Everything that ive had for my life, all my life. And just pictures, pictures are gone. You know, it is just, i dont know how much things you think about that you just lost and i lost everything. I mean, i remember when i got out of there and i started swimming and i was swimming and next thing you know i hit something on my foot and i went oh, that is my car. My car is under there. I lost that, too. Just everything. That is all. But, know, i got my kids. We have a had a lot of generous people. I had a friend come with a suitcase full of clothing and shoes. And weve had a Gofundme Set Up and people have been so generous and wonderful. And were thankful just to have him, help him get back on his feet. So for now hes going to stay with me. And were just figuring out everything day by day. He got a phone and got a license today. So, were getting somewhere. Getting and lots of grandkids hugs and snuggles and lots of time with dad. It is so, so nice to meet both of you. Im so sorry its under these circumstances. Stan pentz, Stephanie Downing, thank you. Well be right back. Thank you. Thank you.
