Fire departments across Indiana County were called out for eight brush fire calls yesterday on what was the warmest day of the year so far.
The first brush fire was reported on Willow Road in Armstrong Township, with Indiana, Elderton and Coal run fire departments at 11:55. About a half-hour later, Brush Valley and Armagh Fire departments would be called for a fire on Route 259 in Brush Valley Township. Then six brush fires were reported within the 1:00 PM hour in Indiana County. The calls were for areas on Ruth Drive in Rayne Township, Route 286 West in Young Township, a second call on Route 259, Smyrna Road in South Mahoning Township, Hoop Hill Drive in North Mahoning Township and Maruca Road in Armstrong township. Crews from Indiana, Marion Center, Plumville, Iselin, Saltsburg, Brush Valley, Homer City, Creekside, Rural Valley, and Perry Township were called out for those fires. The Young Township supervisors discussed the difficulties the recreation board has been having recruiting new members at last Wednesday’s meeting.
According to the Punxsy Spirit, the supervisor’s chair said the recreation board is in need of a secretary and a treasurer. He noted that there has been no interest from the community to help with improvements and maintenance of the Walston Recreation Area.
Defelice said there has been help with grass cutting and maintenance of the Adrian playground but the roof of one of the dugouts at the Gigliotti Ball field still needs replaced.

A DuBois man was arrested after a traffic stop on Harmony Road/Anchor Inn Road in Young Township of Jefferson County on Jan. 8.
State Police in Punxsutawney say the driver was arrested for suspicion of DUI. Charges are pending.
State Police in DuBois are investigating a burglary that occurred on Highland Street Ext. in Brady Township of Clearfield County sometime between Jan. 6 – 7.
Police say someone broke into a barn and took six round hay bales from a DuBois couple.
Indiana Borough Police are investigating an early-morning prowling incident in the 900 block of Water Street.

A two-vehicle crash occurred in the Punxsutawney Walmart Parking lot in Young Township on Dec. 16.
Police say a truck was traveling through the parking lot when the driver turned into a parking spot, striking an unoccupied vehicle.
