WHS grad DiSpirito wins prestigious Truman Scholarship

WOONSOCKET – A Woonsocket High School graduate has received a nationally competitive scholarship to continue her studies in law and environmental work. Dominique DiSpirito, WHS Class of 2018, is one of 62 students across the country to be named a 2021 Truman Scholar. The junior at the University of Maine plans to use the scholarship to attend law school and pursue a career in environmental policy. “In a very real sense, I definitely think I’m still processing, but it’s a huge honor and it’s really humbling,” she said. “Because this is what I want to do with my life, so to be recognized nationally as someone who has the potential and they are going to make a difference, it’s a huge honor.”

4/26/2021 Child reunited with mother after vehicle theft WOONSOCKET – The Woonsocket Police Department said Monday afternoon a child has been reunited with their mother after a vehicle was stolen with the child inside earlier today. Deputy Chief Michael Lemoine said the owner of the vehicle left it running as she ran into Mason Variety Store at 510 Elm St. The vehicle was stolen with a three-year-old child inside. The vehicle was later recovered a short distance away on Sweet Avenue with the child inside unharmed. Police are still seeking suspects in the case.

Arrest made in hit and run that killed an elderly woman

April 19, 2021 12:10 pm WOONSOCKET, R.I (WLNE) – Woonsocket police have arrested a woman linked to a fatal motor vehicle accident that killed an elderly woman on April 16th. On Friday, April 16th, members of the Woonsocket Police Department responded to a serious motor vehicle crash at Harris Ave and Gaskill Street at about 4:00 p.m. Police say an elderly couple crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Ford F-350. The crash resulted in serious injuries to the elderly couple and required treatment at Rhode Island Hospital. The passenger of the vehicle, 72-year-old Irene Gaulin succumbed to her injuries. 81-year-old Louis Gaulin is currently in stable condition.

Police arrest man charged with shooting father in Woonsocket

PAWTUCKET – Pawtucket police have arrested a man charged with shooting and killing his father during an altercation in Woonsocket late Wednesday night. Alex Cote, 22, has been charged with the shooting death of his father, 43-year-old Adam Castonguay. Castonguay was found dead in his apartment at 41 Village Road in Woonsocket around 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning. According to Woonsocket police, Castonguay s girlfriend called to report an altercation between the two late Wednesday night. Deputy Chief Michael Lemoine said the girlfriend contacted police from another room in the apartment while the argument was still taking place.
