The Narendra Modi government has introduced the Women s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha, fulfilling promises made in the 2014 and 2019 elections. The bill aims to reserve 33% of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures. It also proposes that one-third of the seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes will be reserved for women.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal moved the women s reservation bill for passage in the Lok Sabha, saying it is a very important bill and urging members to pass it with unanimity. The bill provides for 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
Home Minister Amit Shah took a dig at Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for interrupting BJP MP Nishikant Dubey s speech on the Women s Reservation Bill. Shah questioned whether only women can care for women and criticised Chowdhury for possibly being jealous of not speaking first. The bill, which was introduced in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, will be discussed in Rajya Sabha on September 21.
Shah said that PM Modi brought forth the vision of women-led development in front of the entire world during the G20 and said that the passage of the bill will mark start of new era. He also recalled how Modi implemented 33% reservation for women in BJP years back.
