On a bright day in July 1987, Elias Bonaros, then 15 years old, grabbed a bucket and headed from his home in Bayside, Queens, to Ronkonkoma, a town 40 miles to the east on Long Island. Dr. Bonaros â now a cardiologist, then a budding naturalist â wanted to see the huge, raucous group of periodical cicadas known as Brood X, which were due to come up in the town.
When he arrived, he found the streets quiet and littered with empty nymph shells. Residents informed him he was a couple of weeks late. âIt was heartbreaking,â Dr. Bonaros â who still lives in Bayside â recalled recently. He comforted himself with the knowledge that periodical cicadas are predictable: This broodâs descendants, he figured, would keep resurfacing in Long Island for the foreseeable future.

A law enforcement source said the cause of death is suspected to be a suicide.
Officers responded to the scene, located opposite of the 800 block of Travis Avenue, at around 2:10 p.m. and discovered the man unconscious and unresponsive, according to an NYPD spokesman.
Multiple NYPD and FDNY vehicles were observed on scene, with members of both departments seen walking along a densely-wooded path away from a main walking and biking trail that runs through the area.
