Documentaries on the war of 1812. Greater honor than being designated as an honorary colonel. It is my pleasure to welcome colonel eshelman to the podium. I have known her for many, many years, and she is, i think, the authority on the history of public buildings in washington, d. C. She has been an architectural historian here in washington specializing in the architectural landscape and planning histories of the city and i have learned a tremendous amount from her over the years. Some of her books include the temple of liberty, buildings of the district of columbia, designing the nations capit capitol, and the fortress of finance, and pam is going to talk about Benjamin Henry latrobes work at the capitol. And, of course, latrobe is also the architect of Decatur House and st. Johns across the square, and so hopefully youll learn a great deal about this arc

I am glad i landed here. I want to tell you a little bit about the book. I will read a little bit about the book. Its nice to be here and see some old familiar faces. You know, whenever i come back to minneapolis i have this feeling what a special place marshal u was, and there are probably a few people here that will remember the place if not agree with me. And so its always nice to be back with old friends. I really date my sell here. I even attended an advanced placement class at the old West High School which was right down here on hennipin you have to be really old when West High School was there. I beg your pardon. [laught
The federal government. Hes been very active and interested in particularly researching the seat of government. Hes been the author of many book and articles. Throughout most of his professional life, hes been the coeditor of documentary history of First Federal congress. I do want to say one thing about one of his books, which i think is a real classic now, thats the creation of washington, d. C. , which is published back in 1991. If anybody wants to know about behind the scenes and proceedings and meetings and all the things that went on in terms of the location of national capital, this book is a must read. Arrive in washington. Theyre so great. They had a fire in the middle of the 19th century but you can see what remains of them in curved bookcases at the library of congress and its incredible. This man, this renaissance man, every subject you can think of is there. Archaeology. History. Art. Farming. Its all there in different languages. That was thomas jefferson. Amazing. Well, two days before the british arrived, the commandant ordered the navy clerk to get a hold of transport to take 124 barrels of gun powder out of the navy yard into the safety of virginia. Booth settled up across into georgetown and saw a wagon outside a store. He rode up and told the two apparent owners he was impounding it for the department of navy. This is wartime. And so some citizens who might normally have buckled to bureaucratic pressure bustled chasing off government officials with abuse and profanities. This is exactly what happened to booth.
