Stop the Spread COVID-19 Testing Site Opens in Haverhill Saturday

Haverhill is offering free walkup or drive-up COVID-19 testing, beginning this Saturday. The “Stop the Spread” site, provided by the state Department of Public Health, begins Saturday, April 10, and will run every Saturday, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Locke Street parking lot off Winter Street. It is next to Common Ground Café food pantry and in back of Butch’s Uptown restaurant. The site is for Massachusetts residents only and there is no cost and no insurance is required.

Mass Bar Association Applauds Kazarosian Police Board Appointment; Calls Choice Inspired

Kazarosian to the state’s new Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission., saying she brings “much-needed perspective.” As WHAV reported first Friday, Kazarosian is one of several appointments required of Attorney General Maura Healey to the Commission. The board will create a police officer certification system and processes for decertification, suspension of certification or reprimand in the event of certain misconduct. The law came in response to reform demands in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death while in police custody in Minneapolis.

Haverhill VFW and Coalition of Veterans Groups Deliver Cooked Easter Meals and Groceries

More than 250 Easter meals were delivered to veterans and their families this weekend by a coalition led by Haverhill’s Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lorraine Post 29. Free meals of baked ham, mac and cheese and green beans were packaged in microwavable containers and delivered Saturday in time to be reheated for Easter Sunday, according to the VFW. The dinners were delivered to veterans and their families who registered in advance. Besides the VFW, assistance was provided by members of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 20, AMVETS Post 147, Marine Corps League, American Legion Post 4 and the Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 294. Easter cards were donated by students of Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School and local businesses such as Peddler’s Daughter, whose employees assisted with deliveries.

Mallory Strain Joins Rep Andy Vargas Office as Legislative Aide

Strain graduated from Suffolk University where she studied economics and government. “Mallory’s experience working with small businesses combined with her data analysis skills will greatly assist Haverhill, as my office continues to work with our community partners to develop a resilient post-pandemic economy,” said Vargas. Previously, Strain worked as a program assistant for Manomet, an environmental nonprofit headquartered in Plymouth. Manomet works with scientists, government and businesses to create a more sustainable environment. As a part of the organization’s Business Sustainability Program, Strain worked with small business owners across the United States and assisted them with achieving environmental, social and economic sustainability.
