The Slavit family says it is not giving up on bringing a passenger riverboat to Haverhill and pledges to bring everyone together in an attempt to resolve any concerns.
Tim Slavit, son of late Harbormaster William J. “Red” Slavit, Thursday afternoon complied with an order to remove two concrete moorings he had placed Sunday in the Merrimack River, off Water Street. Northern Tree Service returned and raised the structures out of the water. The moorings are now being stored at Slavit’s home. He said his meeting with the Haverhill Harbor Commission Tuesday went “sour” and he would like to start over.
The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Haverhill is facing a fundraising challenge.
Throughout the pandemic, the nonprofit has provided additional support for its members, including a full-day learning program, allowing teens and pre-teens to participate in remote learning instead of being isolated at home. To support these efforts, Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Javier Bristol is asking the public to support the “Back a Kid” Fund Matching Challenge, sponsored by the Amelia Peabody Foundation.
“So, we are trying to get that going and really support all the kids in this community. We’ve been doing it all year, so our goal is just to continue to do good and help out the community the best we can. This match is a great way to keep that going, and keep our programs running. So, any support would be really appreciated,” he says.

Methuen, Lawrence and Andover are among 125 communities across the state receiving state money to support downtowns after the impact of COVID-19 on businesses.
Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, Housing and Economic Development Secretary Mike Kennealy and Housing and Community Development Undersecretary Jennifer Maddox said Tuesday communities will partner with consultants to pursue “locally-driven, actionable strategies to support downtown and commercial districts.”
“As we continue to navigate the pandemic and work toward recovery, our administration remains committed to collaborating with the local officials that know their communities best to address their unique challenges,” said Polito.
The Haverhill City Council says it is time to do something about litter and trash on downtown streets. Councilor William J. Macek broached the subject at Tuesday’s meeting after receiving an email from a Haverhill resident complaining about excessive debris downtown. “As a city, we should always look as clean as possible, but what we […]
