Sleepy Poet to close its doors in downtown Gastonia
A business heralded as a game-changer by city officials when it arrived in downtown Gastonia five years ago will close its doors May 31.
The Sleepy Poet, a three-floor antique mall located in the historic S.H. Kress Five and Dime Building on West Main Avenue, dominated the 100 block with more than 36,000 square feet of space.
City officials envisioned the business bringing much-needed foot traffic to the downtown area. Sleepy Poet was able to succeed in accomplishing everything (it) set out to do in Gastonia, owner Dickson Shreffler said in a statement. The historic building in downtown was completely renovated and then filled for almost five years with hundreds of vendors, thousands of customers, and wonderful years of sales. However, after much thought and discussion, Sleepy Poet has made the decision to take advantage of an opportunity that will be great for everyone by selling the Kress building to new owners.
