this fire. it was around 4:15 monday afternoon crews noticed a leak in unit 4. vapor leak of hydrocarbon similar to diesel occurred in our number four unit reporter: at that time refinery personnel responded assessed a risk and started on a repair plan two hours later the problem got worse. approximately 6:30 p.m. the volume of the leak increased. personnel evacuated the area, i m being specific about the number 4 unit area, and initiated emergency response procedures. the hydrocarbon vapor ignited, resulting in the fire that occurred yesterday. reporter: the fire sent huge plumes of black smoke into the air people could see the dark pillars for miles. residents in richmond, north richmond and san pablo were told to shelter in place until after the fire was contained, 11:15. some reported hearing explosions. a claim chevron flatly denies. i want to be clear there were no explosions. there was an ignition that may be what people are talking about hearing but there wa

good tuesday morning. thanks for joining us i m eric thomas. and i m kristen sze massive fire has killed one and injured another. this fire started after 2:45 this morning in a residential four-plex on the 2200 block of warfield way this went to three alarms it took firefighters at least half an hour to knock down. the victim was a woman in her 30s. authorities are saying little about the condition of the injured person. a third person was pulled from the burning home said to be okay now. five others managed to get out. we ll continue to follow this story out of san jose and bring updates as we get them on air and online at abc7news.com. ferries that normally sail from marin to san francisco will remain tied up because of a strike by coalition of labor groups. terry mcsweeney joins us live with more information. reporter: this strike is expected to last until 2:00 this afternoon out of sausalito and larkspur. now word of a second bridge, bus and ferry union joining in o

6:01 on this thursday morning thank you for joining us i m eric thomas. and i m kristen sze. two cases of mad cow disease highway health officials are trying if figure out how they they go it, one person died. reporter: officially it is called creutzfeldt-jacob disease and when you consider that it can incubate in the human body for years maybe decades according to the cdc, these people have a lot of work to do to try to figure out when these two victims got this disease. take a look at one of the victims of creutzfeldt-jacob this is 59-year-old aline shaw of san rafael executive director of love is the answer, a woman who dedicated her life to helping seniors. a public health nurse is telling family members she died of creutzfeldt-jacob, one form of that is mad cow disease. cows get it by eating contaminated feed, humans get it by eating those cows. there was outbreak in england in 1990 and shaw lived in england in 1990. you can get it contaminated medical instruments,
