Emulating Hartford, Waterbury announces $100,000 grants to help businesses locate in its downtown

Waterbury will spend $1.5 million offering matching grants of up to $100,000 to help outfit downtown retail spaces for new and growing businesses. The Board of Aldermen, on Monday, approved spending a portion of the city’s federal COVID-relief funds on the new program. The grants are meant to heal a downtown business district that suffered after large employers including Post University, Webster Bank and others sent staff to work from home at the outset of the pandemic.

By LYNN WARD 22 The Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development has just launched a new initiative, CTforMe.com, to showcase to young professionals why our state is a worthwhile place to live, work and play. The state recognizes that a highly skilled, media-savvy workforce – millennials – is key to the economic recovery of Connecticut. What’s another way to play an active role in this recovery? If you are a business owner, I encourage you to join in on this initiative by taking part in a summer youth employment program that will help build this necessary workforce to keep our economy thriving. Through a partnership with the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board, the Waterbury Regional Chamber is encouraging area employers to register as a summer worksite as part of the NRWIB’s summer youth program.
