Waterbury will spend $1.5 million offering matching grants of up to $100,000 to help outfit downtown retail spaces for new and growing businesses.
The Board of Aldermen, on Monday, approved spending a portion of the city’s federal COVID-relief funds on the new program. The grants are meant to heal a downtown business district that suffered after large employers including Post University, Webster Bank and others sent staff to work from home at the outset of the pandemic.
The State Senate has approved a bill that makes the manufacturing apprenticeship tax credit available to pass-through entities.
Currently, the credit is only available to businesses that are subject to the corporate income tax. The extension would benefit small- and mid-sized manufacturers by offsetting the cost of training new employees and apprentices, according to state Sen. Joan Hartley (D-Waterbury), who is co-chair of the Commerce Committee.

The Waterbury Regional Chamber has named three new hires: Chris Caulfield, director of events; David Huck, communications and social media director; and Joseph Violette, director of public policy and economic cevelopment.
As a sport management graduate from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Caulfield has over 20 years of event experience. He has worked for minor league affiliates of the New York Yankees and New York Rangers and gained most of his experience working at Mohegan Sun as its manager of box office operations and its special events manager. As the events director, Caulfield will oversee the creation, planning and execution of digital and in-person events for the Chamber.
