Art District hosting Second Saturday event
Staff Report
PORTSMOUTH- For those looking for a last minute Mother Day gift, a Saturday event involving several local businesses could provide such a chance.
That opportunity comes through the Arts, Culture, and Innovation District’s first Second Saturday event. Starting at 9 a.m., sales and specials will be available at the four businesses partaking in the event- North Shore Printing, Loft’s Coffee Company, Gallia Street Studio, and Stump Standards.
On Monday, 2nd Ward Councilwoman Charlotte Gordon said the event is part of a larger vision for the district. Located between the edge of Washington Street to Waller Street and between Front and 7th Street, she feels the area is ideal.
Extra lifeguards, $50,000 going to McKinley Pool
By Patrick Keck - pkeck@aimmediamidwest
PORTSMOUTH Low lifeguard numbers and the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to last year’s delayed reopening of the McKinley Pool. Now at least the former should not be an issue as the pool is set to open its doors on Memorial Day.
In addition to two investments totaling $50,000, $30,000 through the Capital Investment Budget Program and $20,000 from an anonymous donor, the lifeguard shortages that have plagued McKinley are not expected to be an issue this year.
Through conversations with Shawnee State University swimming coach Gerald Cadogan, a commitment of 10 to 12 lifeguards has been secured and their training will begin this Thursday at the SSU pool. This exceeds the preferred sum of five, which will allow for more scheduling flexibility.

PORTSMOUTH One piece of legislation will be making its way back to first reading on May 10, just four months after Portsmouth City Council failed to pass it.
With grant funding being the issue last time, City Manager Sam Sutherland said on Monday that he and the Portsmouth Police Department sorted through city finances and came out with a potential solution.
“It was discussed heavily that council would like to see some grant funds applied to this,” he said at the first meeting allowing public in-person attendance in over a year. “We did some digging into the finances and found approximately $81,000.”

PORTSMOUTH A local museum group will have to wait at least two more weeks for a lease agreement following a Portsmouth City Council vote Monday evening.
The first of seven legislation items discussed, the council decided to again table the measure which would have struck a deal between the city and the Scioto County Heritage Museum.
Addressing council in the first meeting open to public attendance in more than a year, SCHM Treasurer Sharon Bender detailed the museum’s restorative progress at its 733 Fifth St. location- home of the former Marting’s building.
