lfujimoto@mauinews.com WAILUKU Saying a defendant poses an “extreme danger to the community,” a deputy prosecutor asked Friday for bail to be increased to $2 million for a man charged with attempted murder for allegedly driving toward a police officer in Wailuku. Kaipo Lapenia-Lau, 25, of Kahului was arrested Tuesday morning after a police pursuit that ended at a residence off Kahekili Highway in Waihee. Lapenia-Lau appeared by videoconference from the courthouse cellblock for his initial appearance Friday in Wailuku District Court. He is charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault on a law enforcement officer, two counts of first-degree resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle and first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer.

lfujimoto@mauinews.com WAILUKU A man who was reportedly frustrated when he couldn’t find his vehicle keys was arrested Wednesday afternoon for allegedly setting his van on fire at a gas station in Kihei. Reynaldo Onnagan, 45, was charged with second-degree arson and habitual property crime. He had parked his van near the car wash at Kihei Texaco at 1281 S. Kihei Road in a location that was 40 feet from gas pumps, 50 feet from a propane tank and 7 feet from a gas refuel receptacle, Deputy Prosecutor Brant Yoshimoto said during Onnagan’s initial appearance Thursday in Wailuku District Court. “He was frustrated he couldn’t find his vehicle keys,” and began blaming employees, Yoshimoto said.

WAILUKU A man charged with attempted murder for allegedly stabbing his wife during a Super Bowl party was ordered to have no contact with her, as he was arraigned Thursday. Ricardo “Rico” Tavares Jr., 40, of Wailuku pleaded not guilty to second-degree attempted murder. He allegedly used a 12-inch kitchen knife to slash and stab his 41-year-old wife at least seven times in the bathroom of their house after they got into an argument during a Super Bowl party at the home Feb. 7, Deputy Prosecutor Brandon Segal said during Tavares’ initial appearance last week in Wailuku District Court. He said the woman’s 76-year-old father and 10-year-old daughter were among the witnesses.
