Man accused of shoplifting from three stores | News, Sports, Jobs

lfujimoto@mauinews.com WAILUKU A 35-year-old man was arrested for allegedly shoplifting from two stores at the Shops at Wailea and from Hi-Tech Surf Sports in Kahului. Steven Sarol was charged with three counts of second-degree theft and resisting arrest. Although the prosecution asked for bail to be reduced to $10,000 during Sarol’s initial appearance Wednesday in Wailuku District Court, Judge Blaine Kobayashi kept bail at $15,000 for Sarol. He was arrested Sunday and charged with the three thefts that occurred April 29. Sarol is charged with stealing merchandise valued at more than $750 each from Sunglass Hut, Gucci and Hi-Tech Surf Sports.

lfujimoto@mauinews.com WAILUKU Bail was increased to $10,000 for a 19-year-old man who was arrested after allegedly pointing a knife at a restaurant worker, then trying to punch a police officer. James Keliikupakako of Makawao was charged with first-degree terroristic threatening, attempted first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and violating public health emergency rules. He was arrested Saturday evening in the parking lot of Kings BBQ & Chinese Restaurant at 197 N. Market St. in Wailuku. Police were called after a restaurant employee reported he was working in the business shortly before 6 p.m. when Keliikupakako walked up to him and brandished the knife, pointing it in the employee’s face, according to a declaration filed in court to support the charges. Keliikupakako also was described as aggressively stabbing an aluminum can.

Ruben Rosado, 31, was charged with second-degree assault, first-degree terroristic threatening, harassment, fourth-degree criminal property damage, first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. He appeared by videoconference from the courthouse cellblock for his initial appearance Thursday in Wailuku District Court. In asking for Rosado’s bail to be increased to $100,000, Deputy Prosecutor Joshua Kent detailed the crimes that started shortly before noon Tuesday when Rosado allegedly threw a glass bottle at a random stranger walking on the sidewalk along Baldwin Avenue in an unprovoked attack.

The Maui News WAILUKU Bail was set at $50,000 for a 35-year-old man who is facing charges alleging he threatened employees at a business near Kahului Airport. Morgan Simmons, 35, was arrested Tuesday and charged with four counts of first-degree terroristic threatening. He allegedly threatened to kill four people multiple times in phone calls March 9, Deputy Prosecutor Lewis Littlepage said during an initial appearance for Simmons on Thursday in Wailuku District Court. Simmons appeared by videoconference from the Maui Police Department for the hearing. He asked to be released on supervision. Deputy Public Defender Gustavo Gonzalez said Simmons was arrested when he returned from Portland, Ore., where he went to see Veterans Administration doctors to address mental health and medical issues.

Officers say they were struck with weapon while detaining suspect | News, Sports, Jobs

Miro-Quesada WAILUKU Two police officers testified they were injured when they were both hit on the head with a weapon while struggling to detain a man who fled after smashing the window of a security vehicle last week. It was only after Cesar Miro-Quesada was handcuffed that police realized the weapon he had been wielding was a metal pipe. “To everyone’s surprise, it wasn’t a wooden stick at all,” said Wailuku patrol officer Scott McCalister. “It was a metal pipe packed with mud that had a slight bend to it.” McCalister and fellow officer Sonnie Waiohu Jr. testified Wednesday at a preliminary hearing in Wailuku District Court for Miro-Quesada, 28, of Lahaina.
