out front tonight, china talks were. a top official of the chinese embassy in washington saying today, quote, taiwan as one of the very few issues that might take china and the united states to conflict, or even a war. this, coming soon after the white house summit to china s ambassador to condemn china s military activities near taiwan. activities, of course, that have gone into overdrive since has bicker nancy pelosi s visit to the island this week. today, 60 to chinese aircraft, 13 chinese warships, conducted activities around the taiwan straight. taiwan says 49 of those jets entered its air defense identification zone. chinese china releasing this video showcasing military readiness. showing lines of uniformed troops at the ready. look, this is the latest military propaganda video released by china yesterday, they put up this one, a rocket launch toward taiwan strait. they ve been conducting live fire exercises and they show multiple conventional missile launches. right b
following the headlines. natasha, first to you. this is a change from the white house. the white house is pushing back very hard on what it says is inf en inflammatory behavior by china. they said please don t up the ante here. now they re making public the fact that they have in fact summoned the chinese ambassador to the u.s. to the white house to essentially give him a dressing down about china s provocations against taiwan in recent days. they had said numerous times that they expected that china would have some kind of reaction to this visit by pelosi, which was extremely offensive to the chinese. but the white house has been, you know, kind of willing to respond in a meaningful way now to the chinese activities that we have seen around taiwan, which are really escalatory and are the most that we have seen in decades. so what the white house is saying now is that they re reiterating to the chinese that this is unacceptable, that the u.s. position on taiwan has not chan
fine, despite persistent fears of a recession. the u.s. government released the latest jobs report this morning. and it far exceeded what economists expected. it showed the economy adding 528,000 jobs in july. that s more than double the number analysts expected. on employment, falling to 3.5%. and these numbers present a new complication for the federal reserve, which has been hoping to cool the jobs market, in an effort to bring down inflation. at the same time, senate democrats now poised to pass a massive bill that could impact everything from the price of prescription drugs to the fight against climate change. we re going to have more on that in just a moment. we start first with the strong jobs report and cnn s matt egan is live with us in new york, cnn s john harwood is live at the white house. matt, we ll start with you. break down the numbers for us, tell us what these numbers are showing. jessica, this is a hot jobs market that just defied all expectations but get
