Right now officials in florida are working trying to identify and locate those still missing after Hurricane Ian ravaged several parts of the state. And while the Search And Rescue missions continue, more than 2,000 people have been pulled to safety despite that the death toll has risen significantly over the last 24 hours. At least 101 people across 11 florida counties died as a result of the storm. Hurricane ian is also to blame for at least four deaths in north carolina. Well this morning more than 400,000 people across the state remain without electricity. Officials warn residents and businesses may be in the dark for weeks or even months and the storm could have a major impact on the u. S. Economy. The Shrimp Industry is devastated. All of those people are without a lot of them lived on the boats. They have no home now and no work. We have got a disaster going on here. Our infrastructure is shot. Lets begin this hour in fort myers, florida, our colleague randi kaye joins us now. Good morning to you. Youve have a chance to survey damage across Fort Myers Beach, give us a sense of what youre seeing now. Reporter were on Fort Myers Beach and this is an area that weve seen from the air, but to get a chance to look at it up close was like nothing ive ever seen before. There were homes on top of homes tlx are staircases to nowhere because the homes were blown off foundations. Area is still closed to residents but were able to go along with Florida Task Force 2, based out of miami, one of the first Search And Rescue and here is what we saw. Hurricane ian chewed through homes and businesses sparing nothing in its path. Massive devastation. Some things, My First Zee Ployment was hurricane katrina. So a lot of hurricanes over the years and this is a big disaster. Reporter Jennifer Brown is a k9 Search Specialist with Florida Task Force two. Her dogs are searching for Human Remains here on Fort Myers Beach. Theyve worked dozens of missions since First Arriving at Fort Myers Beach as the storm was still pounding this community. It was a good day. Again, you dont want to leave anybody behind. That is what were here for. But then on the other hand, when you find anybody, that is its a good thing. Reporter a team of 80 from this task force has been busy Crisscrossing A Seven Mile Stretch on the beach working 24 7, going housetohouse in search of survivors. We found some sheltering in place that needed some info and giving water and ice and food and that information is a huge help for them. Reporter and it is no easy task. Homes crumbled and smashed and stacked on top of others. Businesses blown to pieces. So im going to take you back over there. Reporter this building used to be over there across the street. It was moved by the sheer power of the wind and water. We had about 60 medical calls, medical emergencies that we responded to with two people who actually went into Card Rack Arrest and stopped breathing and the Search And Rescue personnel performed cpr and able to get a pulse back and get them transported to a local hospital. Reporter the team rescued this eltorly couple trapped in their home. Storm has washed away the entire ground floor of their twostory house. This is just one area of Fort Myers Beach where you could see the destruction. Nothing is where it belongs. This Laundry Machine came from that laundromat over there and in this whole area here, these were homes but now those homes are over there. And just look at that level of destruction. Theyre up against the other homes. But they are shredded, crumbled. There is nothing left of them. This woman was rescued today. She has cancer and rode out the storm so she could continue her treatments nearby. It was rushing. It was like 30 miles per hour. It was pulling houses, roughs apart, literally. You could see them float by. We were sitting up in my bedroom watching all of this debris go by. Reporter there is no power or water so anyone at the beach is completely cut off from services. The Search And Rescue team has been using high water vehicles and front loaders to navigate through the debris as they continue to search for anyone trapped in the rubble. Task force two has found Human Remains but did not say how many bodies theyve recovered. Bob and Rosemary Copsac lost everything inside of their home but were rescued today. Our best friend, we have not been able to contact him. Hes 92 and he said hes not leaving the island and i hope he did. His phone is out and so on. I sent tpolice over to his home you havent been able to reach him . No. Reporter so many still unaccounted for and leaving friends and loved ones to wonder if they made it out. And this was this Search And Rescue teams third pass through the area and still finding survivors which is good news. But the Task Force Said that the first 48 hours are the most critical and in that time period they located 150 people who were trapped in their home and rushed to their attics or somewhere else in the home to try to escape the high floodwater and got stuck there. And meanwhile, the mayor here seaing that think dont know how many people are missing and unaccounted for but the task force and the search teams will continue. Like the friend of that man you just spoke with at the end of the piece, they hope their friend is still alive, but they cant reach them. Thank you to you and your team. Right now florida residents are lining up trying to get clean water and food. The state has already distributed 2. 3 million meals. More than 83,000 residents have applied for federal assistance. Our correspondent nadia romero is in florida. Good morning to you. I wonder what people are telling as they try to come and get some help . Reporter good morning, poppy. Were in charlotte county, one of the impacts areas like so many parts of southwest florida. And people need the basically necessities and a lot of people lost everything. So were getting food and water here at this sight that is being ran by the National Guard. That is one of the most important items that people have been looking for. It is ice. Something as simple as ice. Because everything in your freezer and frig likely spoiled due to not having electricity. So you have these coolers lined up but you need ice to keep your food cool. Come take a walk. You could see the line of cars, they will come through this area. This site has opened up just this morning at 9 00. So just about an hour ago. And theyve already seen 80 cars come through. So you have the National Guard soldiers out here and they will hope to load up all of the items into peoples cars and food and water, ice and tarps. When we speak to people, theyre looking for basic necessities. Theyre wondering when power will be back on and weve heard estimates that this will be by saturday in some areas and in other areas it may take much lo longer especially on the Barrier Islands. So the centers popping up across the area are becoming a life saver. Poppy. And thanks to everybody there. Thank you for the reporting in englewood, florida. And the Lee County Electric cooperative, as of this morning more than 130,000 customers that get service from them did not have electricity. That is almost 60 of the people that they serve. The Cooperatives Director joins me on the phone more more. Karen, thank you very much for being with us. I mean, six almost a week out from the brunt of this storm and still 60 of people that you serve without power. Why is that . Well as you could see from the damage, this was a catastrophic event for our community. It was unprecedented. Ive been through charlie and irma and many other hurricanes. Ive never seen anything of this magnitude in our area. We also serve two Barrier Islands that lost infrastructure to even gain access to the islands. So, none of those customers are able to be restored until there is some sort of way to get access. Can you talk about how your because you guys serve some people on sanibel, pine island, how are you actually getting access . Is it by helicopter, have you had to access to it by helicopter to assess the damage so we knew what we were up against. Weve also received assistance from the governor and local agencies and they have a plan to rebuild a bridge that will get us there. But we really need to get there before that. So were looking at different options, including barges, but as you could imagine to take Utility Trucks on a barge is quite a feat and there needs to be infrastructure on the island, a bulkhead to even let the barge land because youre talking about tons and tons of equipment and vehicles to get there. But they have multiple operations working in tandem, a new bridge and temporary bridge and a barge operation. They all sound very complex to say the least difficult and like they would take a lot of time. Does that mean your outlook is for places like sanibel and pine island to not have Power Restores from your teams for weeks, possibly a month . Possibly a month for some areas. The good thing is for some people is that when we were able to assess the damage by air, the day after the storm, we did see that some areas were not as impacted as others. So it will be much easier to restore power once we could gain access to the island. Both islands, that is not case for the entire island. There were some places that were just devastated and, youre right, they will take a month or longer to restore in those areas. Karen ryan, thank you and good luck. I wonder your reaction to the law that putin is signing today and what your hearing from the loved ones still there . Well, poppy, it is very difficult to see how russia tries to invade actually my memories, my childhood, the places where i was born and brought up. But, in fact, we see that no one in the world except north korea recognizes this annexation. And of course Ukrainian Army and president do not. How long could putin sustain there and if there is no negotiation on the table, then where do you see this going . Poppy, what we actually see right now in the moment online, we see that all of our ukraine and our western allies achieved results already. Because we have shown great counter offensives with Regaining Kharkiv and zaporizhzhia and kherson. Our harmy is better prepared th thanks to our international allies. We just need to push more to get free from the army. Let me say. If putin were serious about finishing this conflict, there is nothing that does not allow him to take his army, to withdraw army out of the territory of ukraine. Ukraine wants peace. But we cannot allow someone to invade our country, kill Tens Of Thousands of people, to see all of this enormous Destruction Worth billions and billions of dollars and then just to forget and forgive. Especially at the moment when we see that we can regain our people and our territories back. I know from occupied territories, from the people who i know very closely that they are still waiting and they celebrate the achievements the ukraine army. That is why ukraine asked to stand with us to the very end. We can actually finish this evil by taking the russian army out of ukraine. And then we will need to take russia to hold russia accountable. I do want to ask you, julia, because you served as President Secretary for president zelenskyy, about what is happening on twitter actually between elon musk and zelenskyy. So for folks who arent familiar. Here is what happened. Elon musk posted a tweet yesterday with an idea of how to bring peace and one of his suggestions included redoing elections and under u. N. Supervision and in the regions of the country that were legally annexed by russia and also part of his suggestion included making crimea a part of russia which is what annexed in 2014. President zelenskyy responded with a poll of his own. Because elon musk was poll people. Here is how zelenskyy responded. Which elon musk do you like more, one who supports ukraine or one who supports russia . I wonder what you make of this unsolicited advise from elon musk . That is a very good question. Because elon musk wanted to use his connections with the kremlin to talk to putin and to help to establish some relations between two president s, zelenskyy and putin. New developments this morning in the Georgia Senate race where republican candidate Herschel Walker, a staunch abortion opponent, is denying a report that he urged a woman to have an abortion and reimbursed her for the procedure. They report the woman said she became pregnant while she and walker dated in 2009. And that the woman supported her claims with a receipt, a record of a Bank Depuosit and a get wel card. Walker calls this a lie and a political attack. I have no idea. But it is a flat out lie. And now you know how important this seat is, this seat is very important. Theyll do anything to win this seat, lie, because they want to make it about Everything Else except what the true problems we have in this country is. I could tell you right now, i never asked anyone to get an abortion. I never paid for an abortion and it is a lie. Joining me now is our cnn National Political reporter eva mckend. Eva, walker has campaigned as staunchly opposed to abortion. Even being supported multiple times of a national ban on abortion. And hes been clear when hes been asked, well any exceptions and he said no exceptions. So there is a real question here about truth and hypocrisy. Yes, poppy. That is exactly right. That is why this is getting so much attention. Because it suggested hypocrisy. He holds starkly different positions on abortion than his opponent incumbent senator rafael warnock. When asked about this Last Night Warnock approved his prochoice views. But here is how walker talks about abortion on the campaign trail. I believe in life. Ive seen this people that have had some tough times but tough times make tough people. So no exceptions . No exceptions. Now when added a challenge for walker is that his son christian, a conservative activist, has been really vocal on twitter. Christian has maede a host of damning allegations about his father characterizing him as a liar. Ive been talking to my source this is morning, no statement from the party today. They seem to be treading lightly and appear not wanting to overplay their hand on this very sensitive issue. That is interesting. Eva, thank you very much for your reporting on this. Well with just five weeks to go until election day, federal Officials Say that the threat against Election Workers across america is high. The fbi reports an unusual number of threats in arizona, colorado, georgia, michigan, pennsylvania, nevada and wisconsin. Most key swing states where Election Results were challenged after the election. Im happy to be joined by Lawrence Norden at nyu brend on center for justice. This is sad this is why we have you on. But look at what the fbi said. Look at those state and these are folks that are not getting rich off of helping secure elections. That is exactly right. Theyre doing their job to help protect democracy. Yeah. In fact, for most of our history, these are people who did their jobs in the background and they were doing it because they wanted to serve their neighbors and their community because they wanted to serve our democracy. And you know, since 2020, what Election Workers have been facing are unrelentless threats. It sounds like it is getting worse during the period right before the election. But were talking about people having their shiemsometimes homes invaded and cars damages. Theyre being threatened and followed him and in some cases having their children threatened for the work theyre doing for their communities. You released a poll back in march showing one in three Election Officials know one election worker who has left the job partly due to safety concerns, increased threats and intimidation. What could be done about that . Youve got federal officials jumping in to help train people to deal with potential violence on election day. Yeah. This is very troubling and i think one of the most troubling parts to me is that many Election Workers rieght now fees like nobody has their back and our survey of Election Officials, 80 felt the government was doing nothing or not enough and the state governments werent doing enough. There are things that could be done to help election security. We could offer them privacy protections and resources. It sounds terrible so say but some offices have asked for things after consulting with experts like bulletproof glass and Panic Buttons and they dont have the resources for that right now. So extra money, youre saying, extra resources to provide this protection is needed . Yes. So the New York Times had that fascinating piece over the weekend very disturbing but all of the increase in threats and violence after trump was elected in 2016. The number of reported threats against members of congress rose more than 10 times in 2021. According to Capitol Police figures. Susan collins told the New York Times, i wouldnt be surprised if a senator or house member were killed. Just think about that. And combine it with these threats to Election Workers and i wonder how much that increases your level of concern . Well, i tell you a couple of things. First of all, you made the point, Election Workers are not doing this for fame or fortune. Theyre used to being in the background. So while the threats are similar, theyre often left feeling in a much more vulnerable position. And Election Officials, one of the things that worries me the most is Election Workers leaving the field. In our poll, one in five said that they plan to leave before 2024. So in the shortterm, i think well make it through this election. They are very resourceful. But if you think what it means to look one in five. Think about health care. In one in five doctors said they would leave to the health care, what kind of care would people get. And that is exactly right. But were talking about protecting american democracy by the way in that analogy. I want to ask you finally about something not getting a lot of attention and should but will is the independent state Legislature Doctrine or theory. The Supreme Court is taking uch this case and it is whether or not states have State Legislatures that could pass about federal elections, okay. Who has got the power and what courts and how much power do the State Legislature have over federal elections are run. I should note that a very prominent retired conservative federal judge Michael Luttig just yesterday testified in the january 6 hearing wrote a piece in the atlantic, such a doctrine would be antithetical to the framers intend and the text fundamental design of the architecture of the constitution. What do you want people to know about that and the theory. He said this is the most important case maybe that the Supreme Court has about american democracy and in its 250 year history. Thank you. I miss the the headline on that one. And it is potentially extremely dangerous. The theory that plaintiffs are running with is that there are no checks on State Legislature from the state courts. That is right. From public referendum so the public loses its voice in how federal elections will be run and the State Legislature has full say and they could do whatever they want and that is extremely dangerous for the way elections are run in the United States.
