Uwayo elected Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee President The election was required following the resignation of Valens Munyabagisha last month. National Federations had called for a replacement to be elected sooner than the initial proposed election date of October 8, with the organisation opting to bring forward the date. Uwayo, who has led the Rwanda Karate Federation for the past 12 years, was the sole candidate for the RNOSC Presidency. He received all 56 votes on offer to secure a four-year term in office. Uwayo was earlier this week awarded The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Ray from the Japanese Emperor.

Rwanda National Olympic Committee brings forward election to before Tokyo 2020

Wednesday, 21 April 2021 The Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC) has brought its Presidential election forward to before Tokyo 2020 after a reported backlash from sports federations. RNOSC was due to elect a new leader on October 9 following the resignation of Valens Munyabagisha, who stepped down earlier this month. However, the ballot will now be held on May 8 with The New Times reporting opposition to the later date from local sports bodies. The rescheduled vote will be before the rearranged Tokyo 2020 Olympics which are set to take place between July 23 and August 8, one year later than planned due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
