China, US argue over naval activity in South China Sea

BEIJING (AP) China on Thursday issued its second protest in as many days over United States naval activity in the region, drawing an unusually sharp response from the U.S. 7th Fleet, which accused Beijing of attempting to assert illegitimate maritime rights at the expense of its neighbors.

The United States has further toned down the discord over a naval operation carried out by that country within India s maritime exclusive economic zone (EEZ) last week. The exercise, which did not have India s permission, was conducted off the Lakshadweep coast and had rankled India which immediately registered its opposition via diplomatic channels.

The U.S. 7th Fleet is headquartered at Yokosuka at the entrance to Tokyo Bay. It is the largest of the forward-deployed U.S. fleets, with 60 to 70 escort ships, and carrying some 300 aircraft and 40,000 Navy and Marine Corps personnel. The fleet had participated in all major operations in the Korean War (1950-53).
