Quakertown, Council Rock, North Penn seniors named 2021 presidential scholars

Bucks County Courier Times Seniors Raymond Slifer, of Quakertown Community High School and Upper Bucks County Technical School, Richard Su Fang, of Council Rock High School North, and Catherine Cavanaugh, of North Penn, were awarded the 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholar designation by the U.S. Department of Education. The three are among 161 American high school seniors and the only ones from Pennsylvania who received the distinction, awarded to those who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, technical expertise, leadership, citizenship, service and contribution to school and community.  Slifer is Pennsylvania s first presidential scholar in career and technical education since its inclusion in the program in 2015.

School Nutrition Association Announces National Award Winners

Reply The national non-profit School Nutrition Association (SNA) has named Amber Ott-Underdown, cafeteria manager at Upper Bucks County Technical School, PA, the National Manager of the Year. A little more than a year since COVID-19 created new logistical challenges for school nutrition managers, SNA continues to applaud the dedication, ingenuity and compassion shown by its members who have excelled in keeping students fed during the pandemic. Ott-Underdown, a graduate of the school where she now works, has consistently increased school lunch participation each year, in part by converting the cafeteria to mostly scratch cooking. Students favorites now include chili, chicken cheesesteak burritos, scratch mashed potatoes and roasted chicken on salads, sandwiches and soups. In a style similar to National Signing Day events for high-school athletes, the students committed to careers in the skilled trades and signed letters of intent for a job offer, apprenticeship or advanced technical training. Following the signing, 84 Lumber President Maggie Hardy Knox surprised all 10 students with scholarships, totaling $50,000, towards the trade school of their choosing.
