Hentges honored as School Lunch Hero

A Lake Pend Oreille School District child nutrition manager has been recognized as not just a “School Lunch Hero,” but has received national honors as well. Angela Hentges, the child nutrition coordinator at Washington Elementary School, was named 2023 Western Region Manager of the Year by the national non-profit, School Nutrition Association. Presented by the national non-profit School Nutrition Association, the award recognizes the dedication, ingenuity, and compassion shown by cafeteria managers who have excelled in providing high-quality, nutritious meals to students throughout the school year.

Reply The national non-profit School Nutrition Association (SNA) has named Amber Ott-Underdown, cafeteria manager at Upper Bucks County Technical School, PA, the National Manager of the Year. A little more than a year since COVID-19 created new logistical challenges for school nutrition managers, SNA continues to applaud the dedication, ingenuity and compassion shown by its members who have excelled in keeping students fed during the pandemic. Ott-Underdown, a graduate of the school where she now works, has consistently increased school lunch participation each year, in part by converting the cafeteria to mostly scratch cooking. Students favorites now include chili, chicken cheesesteak burritos, scratch mashed potatoes and roasted chicken on salads, sandwiches and soups. Considered the highest honor a school nutrition manager can earn, the award recognizes a cafeteria manager in Connecticut who has demonstrated dedication and ingenuity to improve his or her school meal program. This is the fourth year in a row that MPS has taken home the statewide Manager of the Year title.
