DCCs have to share a larger part of blame for local body poll debacle The All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Monday appeared to have backed the party’s State leadership for now amid raucous demands for drastic changes at the helm. AICC general secretary in charge of Kerala, Tariq Anwar, gave the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) a backhanded compliment by remarking that the party had fared better in the recent local body polls than in 2015.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) on Monday managed to take control in five out of six municipalities in Kottayam.

Although unable to win the minimum numbers in any of the municipalities, the coalition rode on luck and the support of Independents to win the floor tests in five municipalities.
The most dramatic among these was the election at the Kottayam municipality, where the UDF-backed Independent Bincy Sebastian defeated LDF candidate Sheeja Anil in a draw of lots.

Ahead of Christmas, Christians in Kerala have decided to boycott Halal meat and products saying they cannot consume food item which is against their religious ethos.
Church s Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) will hold a protest and an awareness campaign two or three days before Christmas.

More than 26.37 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the three-tier civic bodies in Malappuram district on Monday. When the official figures were released at 7 p.m., the district had recorded 78.81% polling.
Women turned up in large numbers, outnumbering men at many polling stations, and formed long queues from morning. As many as 3,975 polling stations had been arranged for 33.55 lakh voters spread in 15 block panchayats and 12 municipalities in the district.
