A North Carolina police officer who had joined his department last year was gunned down Wednesday night outside of a fast-food restaurant during a shootout that also left an armed suspect dead and another officer wounded, officials say.
The gunfire happened Wednesday night in Concord, a city of about 79,000 residents, about 27 miles northeast of downtown Charlotte. Today we are mourning the loss of a beloved family member who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty late Wednesday night, the Concord Police Department said in a statement Thursday.

The shooting happened late Wednesday night in Concord, a city just northeast of Charlotte.
Authorities identified the slain officer as Officer Jason Shuping, who joined the force last year. The wounded officer was taken to a hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, the city’s police department said on its Twitter page.
The Charlotte Observer reported that the shooting happened in the parking lot of a Sonic Drive-in, after a 911 call about a nearby car crash. A passing motorist told responding officers that a man who was on foot had tried to steal her vehicle at the Sonic, police said.

A police officer has been killed and another injured in a shooting in Concord, North Carolina.
The Concord Police Department said the suspect in the Wednesday shooting had also died. The suspect was armed, according to a tweet posted by the police department early Thursday.
The officer-involved shooting took place in Gateway Lane near Speedway Boulevard. One officer died while another sustained injuries that are not life-threatening, police said.
