A new program in memory of a fallen Mount Holly Police officer will help build bridges between officers and civilians for years to come.
Micha Autry – a nurse at Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center – was grieving with her fellow Mount Holly residents following the shooting death of Officer Tyler Herndon in December 2020 when she read about large-scale adopt-an-officer programs across the U.S.
Generally the programs connect law enforcement officers and first responders to families, who will support and thank their officer for their service with gifts cards, money and other gifts.
Autry – the mother of a firefighter and cousin of a police officer – thought a smaller, localized program could benefit the Mount Holly area.

This Saturday, January 9th, Carolina Cruzin4Jeeps and Carolina Cruise4Kids have teamed up to support our local law enforcement. The We ve Got Your 6 cruise and fundraising event will support several of our local officers who were recently injured in the line of duty. Cars, Jeeps and motorcycles will line up together for the cruise to show their respect for two local fallen officers, Concord Officer Jason Shupin who died in the line of duty on December 16th and Officer Tyler Herndon of the Mount Holly Police Department who died in the line of duty on December 11th.
In an emailed statement to WCNC Charlotte, Chief Proctor said: My officer Cpl. Whittington is recovering and has a very long road ahead of him. He is still in pain at times but is progressing daily. He is in good spirits and told me today that he holds “no ill will toward the shooter and has forgiven him.” Cpl. Whittington says “we must be willing to forgive as Christ has forgiven us”.
I, Chief Proctor, know that those words seem strange to many but we will never heal as individuals, as a City, State or Nation until we learn to come together and truly care for one another even in the most difficult situations. I do not know what caused Mr. Anthony to shoot Cpl. Whittington but I thank God that he is still here and progressing daily. We are so thankful that we did not have to plan another funeral for another hometown hero as we all have seen with the tragic killings of Officer Tyler Herndon of Mt Holly Police and Officer Jason Shuping of Concord Police.
