A 25-year-old police officer has been shot and killed just two days shy of his birthday.
Officer Tyler Herndon died in a firefight in Mount Holly, North Carolina, early Friday while tackling an armed burglar.
Joshua Funk, 24, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after police say he opened fire on officers at the scene.
Officer Herndon had been due to celebrate his 26th birthday on Sunday alongside his twin sister - now, his family are planning a funeral just two weeks from Christmas.

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. – A community in mourning is coming together to remember a Mount Holly police officer killed in the line of duty.
Officer Tyler Herndon would have turned 26-years-old on Sunday. He died while responding to a break-in early Friday morning.
On Saturday, there was a growing memorial on top of his patrol car, as dozens of people came by the Mount Holly Police Department to pay their respects.
