Im martha mccallum, growing up my mother, betty mccallum, told us the story of her cousin harry gray who shared with us his touching letters in the summer of 1944 at 18 he left arlington, massachusetts just after High School Graduation to join the marines and serve in the pacific. I was always intrigued and moved by these letters and i knew very little of the battle of iwo jima but i knew harrys death there left a deep grief in my mothers family. A few years ago i decided to tell his story. It struck me that in war movies there are the heroes and then there are hundreds of others.
