Three people are behind bars after state authorities busted an illegal moonshine operation in rural Russell County.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday, Jan. 6, carried out a search on Rutherford Road near Hurtsboro where agents discovered a 48-barrel still, said Trooper Joel Hart. Agents brought in the Russell County Sheriff’s Office to assist, and the lawmen then carried out a search warrant at a residence associated with the still.
Authorities seized about 325 gallons of illicit moonshine whiskey hidden throughout the property, Hart said. Additionally, multiple items of suspected stolen property were located, including flatbed trailers, a horse trailer, AR-15-style rifle and documents related to identity theft.
2 killed in fiery Elmore County crash

Two people were killed late Tuesday in a single-vehicle crash in Elmore County.
Alabama State Troopers on Wednesday identified the victims as Tobaius D. George, 28, and Miracle D. Johnson, 19, both of Wetumpka.
The crash happened at 10:55 p.m. on Chapel Road near Luther Street, about five miles west of Wetumpka, said Trooper Joel J. Hart. George was driving a 2007 Hyundai Sonata that left the road, struck a tree and overturned before catching fire.
Johnson, the passenger, was not using a seat belt and was ejected. Both were pronounced dead on the scene.

PRATTVILLE, Ala. (WSFA) - Alabama state troopers say their investigation into a wreck in Elmore County has determined a vehicle fleeing one crash was quickly involved in a second that turned fatal.
The crash happened on Cobbs Ford Road, about one-tenth of a mile west of Millbrook, near Exit 179 of Interstate 65.
Two people were killed and four others were injured as a result, according to ALEA State Trooper Joel J. Hart. Those killed included Ethel W. Harris, 73, of Selma, and Rashard T. Adkins, 36, of Jones (Autauga County).
