Three people are behind bars after state authorities busted an illegal moonshine operation in rural Russell County.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday, Jan. 6, carried out a search on Rutherford Road near Hurtsboro where agents discovered a 48-barrel still, said Trooper Joel Hart. Agents brought in the Russell County Sheriff’s Office to assist, and the lawmen then carried out a search warrant at a residence associated with the still.
Authorities seized about 325 gallons of illicit moonshine whiskey hidden throughout the property, Hart said. Additionally, multiple items of suspected stolen property were located, including flatbed trailers, a horse trailer, AR-15-style rifle and documents related to identity theft.
