Today is election day, and across eastern iowa voters will choose City Council Members and make other local decisions. One choice for voters. Is if the Cedar Rapids Public Library see additional funds. The library wants voters to approve a levy of 27 cents for one thousand dollars of the assessed taxable valuation of a home. That would cost the owner of a cedar rapids home valued at 150 thousand dollars an extra 23 dollars a year. This levy would raise an estimated onepointsix Million Dollars each year for the library. Board members say if they dont get the funding, the library could close one day a week. Also on the ballot in cedar rapids are those vying for the atlarge and district candidates for city council. Voting officials in Johnson County will be extra watchful during todays city elections. They want to make sure poll watchers are following state law. News. Today in mason city, republican president ial candidate ted cruz responded to the arrest of two refugees on terrorist charges. Police arrested one in houston, texas, and the other in sacramento, california, on charges of supporting isis. Cruz is using this as a way to support his view that the us should not accept refugees from syria. Both came in through the vetting programs that president obama tells us are perfectly effective for vetting terrorists. Cruz used to be a long time supporter of expanding legal immigration. But he now says there should be a temporary halt on legal immigration. Johnson county needs poll workers for a january 19th special election. County auditor Travis Weipert says because of the unusual date and the short notice, the usual workers are not available. Poll workers get 200 dollars for the entire day.
