tonight, the january 6th hearings. good evening. thank you so much for being here with us tonight. we know that you have a lot of options for where to watch and how to watch tonight s hearing. it makes us all the more grateful that you have chosen to be here with us on msnbc. i m rachel maddo with joy reid. tonight is a big night for us. a big night for american democracy. we have had a few other instances in our modern history of big, public hearings. all the networks scuttling their schedules to air the proceedings live, but none of us have ever covered something quite like this before. the january 6th investigation is about the first time in american history that the transfer of power between presidents was not peaceful. tonight in the ornate cannon caucus room inside the u.s. capitol the january 6 ths investigators said they would give them a skralg amount. the investigators plan to show video footage from the attack that s never been seen by the public before, including
least legitimate committee in american history. over the next hour, we ll drill into what happened january 6th. we ll look at the revelations that may come out tonight. we ll ask what effect the january 6th riot has had on american democracy, and the way it is seen around the world. with the context attorney and former mayor of baltimore stephanie rawlings blake, ron christie, former senior adviser to president george w bush, and former federal prosecutor joe moreno. hello, welcome to the programme. after 11 months, nearly 100 subpoenas, and more than 1,000 interviews, the congressional committee investigating the january 6th attack on the us capitol will deliver its findings. a few hours from now, on primetime television, the public will be shown the interviews the committee conducted behind closed doors with white house staff, trump campaign officials and the interviews they conducted with members of the former presidents own family. we know so much about january 6th, but
and to, quote, connect the dots between the former president s election lies and the violence that unfolded that day. images are still so shocking. tonight is expected to include never before seen video leading up to the capitol attack and as it unfolded, as well as clips of taped interviews with trump administration officials and family members, their testimony. we also expect to hear live witness testimony from two people who had an upclose view of the rioters. and this is just the first round. more hearings are scheduled over the several weeks coming with the committee releasing a final report in september, that, of course, a couple of months before the midterms. let s begin with lauren fox on capitol hill. so, lauren, walk us through what we expect on the first day of these hearings tonight. reporter: well, this is the first opportunity for this committee to come back after months of work behind closed doors. we expect all of this is going to kick off with an opening
