come to office saying i ll be tougher on crime. yeah, it s interesting. this is the debate that didn t have a lot of areas of agreement but both governor hochul and lee zeldin had a lot of nice things to say about new york mayor eric adams who as you mentioned is a moderate and ran on a crime-fighting, tough on crime message. the jury is still out whether that s working because lee zeldin is also running on some of the very crimes that eric adams is trying to fight. one thing i think is interesting this is a perception issue. you saw kind of both candidates talking about this. hochul focusing on guns, gun control, gun safety touting her efforts to do things like pass that raise the age bill after the tops supermarket shooting. raising the age for buying a gun. transit crimes are up but things like shootings and murders are down. so it s really a perception issue as well but zeldin, it is helping zeldin, the perception that people are feeling unsafe.
they can see it with their own eyes, there is a difference in this city now. you are talking just in transit crimes alone we are up 43% year-to-date. that s more than 500 extra victims. for the 28 day period. statistically speaking 183 crimes. more that be six victims in major felonies per day. that is an absolute ludicrous amount. brian: it s nuts and lax attempt at law and order and letting a third of the people out of prison and exactly why already in the polls see fetterman dr. oz in the margin of error with federerman he was trailing by 13 points and you see man detective la barnes following like a rock in wisconsin. they can t scrub their sites quick enough. steve: comes down to do you feel safe? if you don t feel safe going to the bank? ainsley: people can t afford
criminals to ensure that the real violent crime is handled. so, new yorkers want that, but they also want us to take a look at the root of the problem, and that s poverty. summer youth jobs. summer is coming right now. we ought to have our young people working and doing positive things. the mayor is pushing for that. we re pushing for that in washington. these are all efforts to really bring down crime. i want people that don t live in new york to get a sense of what s happening here in the city when we talk about increase in crime. it s happening in major cities across the board, crime is up, especially post-pandemic but when you re looking at new york numbers, let s put up some of these numbers. 75% increase this transit crimes in january. that s insane. 139% increase since 2019 of people carrying knives on the transit system. and that s, by the way, just what s happening underground. weaver not talking about what s happening aboveground as well. you got a new administration here.
julie: jonathan serrie. thank you. new york city mayor eric adams announced he will double police presence on subways after this week s mass shooting in brooklyn. other democrats and the liberal media are pushing back. recent headlines. increasing police presence on the subway didn t prevent brooklyn mass shooting. adding more won t increase public safety, either. making the subway safer with fewer police. former governor andrew cuomo did plan to expand police patrols by 20%. congresswoman alexandria ocasio-cortez and other liberal democrats pushed back saying andrew cuomo should improve mta rather than go on cop hiring spree. joy reed tore into the mayor s decision tweeting this. black and brown passengers would likely bear the brunt of treatment ranging from rude to rough. even before the mass shooting transit crimes had surged up 68% over the past year alone.
is unfortunately not an isolated incident. this is an extreme example, and it is a very active situation. you were inaugurated at the end of new year s eve you were inaugurated. so you ve been in office since the beginning of 2022. since the beginning of 2022, mr. mayor, there have been 375 transit crimes. that s a jump of nearly 73% in that area since 2021. and that is the city recorded 41%. 41% increase in overall major crime through the first few months of 2022. and those stats are really up until march. they may be even higher now. why is this still happening, particularly given, as you well know and our viewers know, you campaign as somebody who was going to stop this. the goal is, we are putting in place a major initiatives to
