A fake traffic police e-challan scam is being operated by cyber criminals who bank upon the people failing to notice or reading the e-challan carelessly. In this regard the government has launched an cyber security awareness campaign few months back to make people stay aware of such kind of ongoing cyber scams.
In 2022, a staggering 4.73 crore traffic violation challans were issued in India, amounting to Rs 4,654.26 crore. Despite increased fines, the problem persists. Major violations include absence of valid Pollution Under Control certificates, driving with expired Registration Certificates, driving under the influence, failure to yield to emergency vehicles, and juvenile offences.

Individuals who fail to pay traffic fines exceeding Rs 20,000 despite prior notices from the police will now face legal action. Over 1,000 vehicles have been issued fines exceeding Rs 50,000. Offenders will be chargesheeted and summoned to court, with a warrant issued if they fail to appear. The authorities are also taking steps to recover pending fines by requesting the transport commissioner s office to collect fines from vehicle owners when they approach the RTOs for transfers or fitness certificates.
