No 1 Hewitt puts 14 hits on Bob Jones to cap 3-0 day in Oxford

Photo by Vickie Unlap Hewitt polished off Thursday with a come-from-behind win over the Patriots, as the Area 6 champions posted 14 hits and stranded nine Bob Jones runners on base. The Huskies (48-2-1) scored at least one run in five of their six plate appearances.

Lord cracks walk-off single as No 1 Hewitt starts state tournament with 5-4 win

By Erik Harris, sports editor OXFORD A Jenna Lord single lifted the top-ranked Hewitt-Trussville Huskies to a 5-4 victory over Baker on Thursday in the first round of the Class 7A state tournament.  Lord’s timely contact moves her huskies into the winner’s bracket against No. 10 Hoover. Photo by Erik Harris After not trailing throughout the East Central Regional last week, Hewitt-Trussville found itself in a 1-0 hole right off the bat on Thursday. Baker sophomore Emily Mizelle led off the first-round contest with a solo homer into center field. Her high-hanger caught a stiff Oxford breeze and carried the fence for a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. 

Lord slaps in 5 runs, No 1 Hewitt earns state tournament spot

MONTGOMERY The No. 1-ranked Hewitt-Trussville softball team stayed red-hot on Friday.  With their 13th and 14th straight victories, the Huskies (45-2-1) completed a 2-0 run through the Class 7A East Central Regional to keep their state championship defense alive. Photo by Erik Harris An abundance of offensive production sent Hewitt-Trussville off with a 12-2 win over No. 9 Central-Phenix City in the morning session and an 11-4 victory over eighth-ranked Auburn in the No. 1 qualifier game Friday afternoon in Lagoon Park in Montgomery. 

SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Top-ranked Huskies bag 3 bombs to secure regional bid

By Erik Harris, sports editor HOOVER Hewitt-Trussville gave another impressive outing on Thursday night in Hoover, as the No. 1-ranked Huskies tore past Spain Park 7-4 in the winners’ bracket of the Class 7A, Area 6 softball tournament.  Shortstop Kenleigh Cahalan was huge for the Huskies (42-2-1), as she blistered twin bombs to left field. Photo by Erik Harris Hewitt-Trussville began the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Oak Mountain on Wednesday. Thursday’s win guarantees the Huskies a spot in the Montgomery regional next week and a shot at the Area 6 crown on Friday afternoon. The third-ranked Jaguars will battle Vestavia Hills for another shot at Hewitt. 

SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: No 1 Hewitt wins on senior night; Moody tops Pinson 19-3

By Erik Harris, sports editor The Tuesday-night softball slate includes a senior night celebration at Hewitt-Trussville and a dominant showing from the Moody Blue Devils. See game recaps below.  Hewitt-Trussville 13, Tuscaloosa County 4  It was senior night in Trussville, and the top-ranked Huskies celebrated the occasion with a 13-4 victory over Tuscaloosa County. Seniors Madi Mitchell and Meredith Whitt both homered as Hewitt-Trussville (40-2-1, 4-1) captured its 40th win of the season and ninth in-a-row.  Senior pitcher Tori Hyde worked a complete game, holding the visitors to four runs and seven hits while her Huskies scattered 14 hits and built a 5-0 lead after two innings. Fellow seniors Crystal Maze (two hits and two RBIs), Jenna Lord (two hits and two runs scored), Anyce Harvey (three hits and two runs scored) and Katelyn Murphy (one hit and one RBI) also delivered at the plate.
