that that coalition can come together again in 2024. maybe it can, but the point is, for democrats, what happened was when the chips were down, right, they met the moment and they proved they could put the coalition together. they could make the right arguments, they understood what was happening in the country. they understood as meacham says the threat that was present, and were able to deliver, even ticket splitters. i found it to be one of the most positive things coming out of 2022. that and the fact that republicans who lost were actually willing to concede. all right. jon meacham, thank you so much for coming on this morning. his new book, of course. by the way, this book, it just may be his best. it s a good christmas present. it s an incredible christmas present. and there was light abraham lincoln and the american struggle. that is what you want for christmas. i can count on 12 of
were going to get asked that the government didn t want i don t want to start speculating as to what the motivations were because we don t know. i just believe that the timing wasn t a coincidence. neil: congressman zeldin, you don t want ronna mcdaniel to stay as the rnc chair. you don t want the job yourself. you still feed that way? i believe we need new leadership at the rnc, this is an opportunity for the party to grow to improve messaging and not just articulating what we re against. joe biden, the democratic party. let s talk about what we re going to do differently. when you re trying to elect a republican president in 2024 and republicans to congress, there s a lot more that the party can do to be able to reach out to democrats and ticket splitters while trying to energize the base. there s so much at stake in 2024. i believe that having fresh blood and new leadership is an opportunity for our party that
first term senator i ve seen in my time in the senate. right? the question is, yes, she s voted with biden i think 93% of the time. he asked her is that going to change? she said, nothing is going to change. but we don t know what this means for her votes. she s being honest in nothing is going to change in the fact she was able to use her status as someone who is inclined to bring republicans on board to elevate herself in any given discussion, right. and she, joe manchin of west virginia, they re able to have a transactional relationship with their own party and extract concessions that benefit them and their constituencies in their state. it s not an accident she said arizona voters half a dozen times and we know in arizona there were a lot of ticket splitters in the election. whether or not she s running in the future it s fair to say she s trying to maintain the
to the specifics though of the governor s race, stacey was running against an incumbent. in 2018 both were unknown sort of. you did see in the general election something we haven t seen in a long time where you saw ticket splitters. you saw some people who voted for kemp and may have actually voted for warnock. we know that in that general election walker underperformed warnock s vote by about 200,000 votes and it s clear in the runoff election he was not able to close that gap. the other thing i want to mention that i think was at play here in addition to the things kemp mentioned, for african american voters, particularly african american men, there was a conversation going on around which of these two men is will do we want representing
increase his performance, precisely where walker needed to do it. remember, brian kemp got some 200,000 more votes just four weeks ago than walker. his critical mission was to find some of the votes in this area, and bring them on board. he failed to do so, casey. and when you look at this, and you ve been thinking about, and been studying these questions for a very long time. i, mean why is it do you think that voters were willing to say, i will vote for brian kemp and i will also were vote for raphael warnock especially in a world where, we thought, we were talking about this earlier. they were basically ticket splitters, that were dead. yeah, we don t live in a very area of polarized politics. and we do see the decrease in ticket splitting but the reality is that brian kemp was presenting to voters a different kind of republican than herschel walker was. herschel walker was tied to donald trump, georgia rejected
