Pretty quickly as weve already seen in parts of the state. Take a look at Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley there. A shelter at home order now taking effect there tomorrow night. This all comes as the state surpasses 1. 3 million cases. Yesterday alone the state added more than 25,000 new cases. For much of the bay area theres so much uncertainty right now. One thing businesses do know is that they want this to be the last shutdown. Nbc bay areas tom jensen has more from Contra Costa County. Reporter one last shot at some sort of normalcy at this walnut creek brewery before it has to close down along with a whole host of other Contra Costa County businesses. But it was a dismal day of sales following reports of record covid19 cases and pending statewide stay at home orders that will go into effect here and at four other bay area counties starting sunday night. Every time theres an announcement like this that comes out people become a little bit more nervous about going out. Just that alone hurts us as well. Reporter manager mike moore says its tough but he understands Public Health has to take precedent over profit. Well do everything were supposed to do and probably even a little bit more. Reporter the owner of this neighboring salon says shes been told salons in Contra Costa County will have to shutdown for at least three weeks. So this weekend shes going to stay open later than her normal 5 00 closing time. Some people, though, still denying the ferocity of the coronavirus and questioning the latest orders. Businesses are hurting and the solution is going to hurt more than the problem. Reporter others telling us they cant ignore it anymore because the proof is everywhere. And the solution to getting through the pandemic is complying with health orders. Crur going backwards and you kind of now are getting the reality you just need to sit at home and not prolong this any longer. Reporter the lost business has been painful no doubt but nothing like what patients and professionals face in covid units right now. We hope this is the end of it. Reporter trying to remain up beat with the initial widespread u. S. Vaccinations hopefully just weeks away and optimistic that more in the public will do their part in what has to be a team effort to beat the virus and make this the last shutdown of the pandemic. In walnut creek, tom jensen. Boom, right there. Reopen our schools. Thats the message a group of berkeley parents sent to health leelde lee leaders today. The parents gathered in berkeley for a socially distant protest. They say Remote Learning isnt sufficient. They argue all that screen time takes a toll on kids mental and physical health. They point out that schools have a low rate of virus transmission. Now we know that schools are not the driver of this epidemic, and yet we feel like our School District isnt responding to science, isnt making decisions based on science. And even the hybrid models they offer are completely untenable for working parents, for parents whose children are struggling with virtual education. The parents on calling on the berkeley unified School District to come up with some sort of plan for reoeng that goes beyond the currently proposed 4 hours a week for Elementary Schools only. In a statement the district said, quote, perkily unified is currently working diligently to be ready to reopen our schools in a hybrid model that will balance families differing needs at the point that state and county Health Officials indicate that it is safe. Another victim of covid19 drop off sites at lay braibrari Alameda County will close up. People say theyve been a very helpful way to keep people entertained during the pandemic. Ive seen young people, mothers with little ones including all the way up to my age and past. Well, the drop off sites will reopen when the stay at home order lifts and that is january 4th. Not just businesses. The new stay at home order means zoos have to close, too. The oakland zoo. Donations poured in at the last second. The zoo was able to fill its reserves again, but without visitors that money is only going to last so long through the expected 3 to 4 week closure. Even so the zoo is not planning on letting any of its staff go. Were going to muscle our way through it and do what we can. We have a commitment to our animals to make sure without a doubt theyre taken care of. Tickets purchased in advance will be honored once the zoo reopens. It also plans to expand its nighttime show for another month. Under a health order the San Francisco zoo and happy hollow zoo in san jose will also be forced to shutdown. In the south bay concern continues to grow. Friday there were a record 895 new covid cases. In an effort to get more people tested sant ouga clara county i opening a new testing site, a new pop up testing site where people can test themselves. The drop in site is at the Emmanuel Baptist church on north white road. People can selfadminister a nasal swab test. Its open tuesday, december 8th through friday december 11. We know there are a lot of moving parts to this whole stay at home order, so weve made sure to break it all down for you. You can find all that information on our website. Thats nbcbayarea. Com. Weve got the winds picking up leading to a rare fire danger in december, and because we dont have enough lets have a potential power shutoff at the beginning of the week. Rob mayeda, youve got a lot to cover. Whats going on . Yeah, looks like the calender has wound back to october because we have these very conditions outside. The good news it should help our air quality but behind it the wind picking up. Take a look at the winds right now. Not seeing much. I think youre going to notice it more in the north bay hills during the day. And yes december fire danger where those gusts could get about 45 Miles Per Hour at times. Portions of of napa county and Sonoma County could be seeing those pg e power shutoffs. A closer look at the wind speeds hour by hour and our next best chance of rain comes back in the forecast. Okay, rob, thanks so much. Historic protests in india are having ripple effects here in the bay area. The bay area toll plaza leading into east bay to San Francisco was clogged today because of a protest in support of farmers in india. Protesters reportedly traveled in car caravans to the indian consulate in San Francisco. The farmers strike in india is over new laws deregulating the agriculture markets. The laws take power away from the farmers. They give corporations the power to set crop prices. Now, on thursday india saw the largest protest anywhere in history with 250 million workers taking part in that strike. A followup for you now to San Franciscos new street crisis responds team. Britain was the first country to grant emergency authorization for pfizers vaccine. Now health leeaders are preparig to start innoculating the population on tuesday. Vaccines will first go to those over 80 and to nursing homeworkers. We expect quite quickly to go up to about 400 a day and beyond that 500 and above. The holidays are often a difficult time of year for those who have lost family members or lived far away from family. The pandemic only amplifying those problems, but experts say being alone does not have to be alone. And rob, you have the big stories of the day. You got the smoke is going to be leaving and hopefully no more smoke coming in from fire. Look at the fire danger in december. Its crazy. Because the hill sides are still october dry around the bay area. And yes, the wind will pick up. Good news for air quality. Not so good news will be the direction of the wind which will be north and offshore as we head into monday morning. Cooling quickly as the clouds start to and a pretty view. San francisco a little chilly at 51 degrees. You see some of the city lights there. 54 currently in walnut creek. And in san jose or actually livermore there 53 degrees with the temperatures around san jose also in the 50s. Heres the better part of the forecast tomorrow improving if the wind picks up. Fortunately the weather system bringing up the wind isnt bringing us any chance of rain. You can see it falling apart as it crosses the bay area, so well start the day tomorrow with some clouds, but those clouds start to clear as we head through the afternoon. Clear start mostly in the 40s and a few upper 30s in santa rosa and sonoma for the morning. Highs tomorrow in the low to mid60s and starting off in the north bay things relatively quilqu quiet. You see those areas in purple, those will be the top wind gusts over 30 Miles Per Hour at times for elevation above 1,000 feet. Wind speeds start to ramp back down heading into monday evening. So unfortunately, no real signs of any rain in the forecast at least for the next several days. And temperatures start to trend a bit warmer. If youre keeping track we shouldnt have to look this farout for rain in december, but right now looks like tuesday, december 15th. Pencil that in. Its not in the seven day forecast, but in the tenday outlook. We may see our fortunes change as we head to the middle part of the month. But in the meantime our weather with some wind and a lot like october in the bay area. Back to you. Well keep our fingers crossed for some rain.
