But with the covid and everything going on, its definitely going to be different this year. Reporter different, because people are planning smaller gatherings, if any. And thousands are rushing to get tested. For several day, people have been waiting in long lines at Dodger Stadium at a drivethrough to get tested. And as we checked around the bay area, getting a test right now is either not possible or next to impossible. The cdc classifies thanksgiving gatherings as high risk. So many are taking precautions ahead of time. Testing is not foolproof. Reporter stanford Infectious Disease specialest says there can be problems with the test itself. You can have improper swab technique. Its not a very comfortable test to be done, but sometimes its not done properly, and you may have a false negative. Reporter and threaten is a proper time to get a covid test before a gathering. Two days before thanksgiving is ideal. But there is a lot of lag between testing and resulting. And theyll there will be presumably a lag between when you get the test and when you meet with your family members. Reporter you may have a low level of virus in you when you get the test and test negative, but by the time you meet with family, you can spread the virus. If were trying to give thanks and be kind to our families, we shouldnt be putting them at risk for catching covid. Reporter doctors say even with a negative test, you should still wear a mask and keep your distance. Thats the only way to gather this holiday season. Cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. That is our reality. Thank you, cheryl. The u. S. Is crossing a tragic threshold. Take a look. More than 250,000 american lives have been lost to covid19. Here in california, the state has more than one million cases and nearly 10,000 new covid cases were added just yesterday. The Positivity Rate is also rising. The sevenday average is 5. 3 . The World Health Organization says anything over 5 is worrisome and should prompt business closures. We talk a lot about the spike in cases. Lets compare numbers here. Nationally and statewide, the yellow line right here you see there is californias numbers. Per capita, the cases here in california. The blue line is the National Average per capita. Look at july. This is the height of the summer surge. We in california, the yellow line here, we were actually higher than the National Average. Then everything started to go down. However, the National Average, the blue line started to spike in october and continues to skyrocket. The rate of cases in the u. S. Drastically higher than here in california. Jessica . Well, raj, a covid outbreak on a coast guard cutter stationed in the bay area. The question is how. The u. S. Cgc stratton is in its homeport tonight in alameda after more than 11 of its 230 crewmembers tested positive for covid19. Earlier today the entire crew was tested and placed in quarantine. Or i should say in isolation. The affected crewmembers reported mild symptoms and are receiving medical care. Before departure, though, at the end of october, the crew underwent a period of selfquarantine and passed two separate coronavirus tests. Lets be very clear here. There is a lot of hope. But challenges remain such as shipping 10s of millions of doses across the country in well below zero temperatures. Another challenge, convincing skeptical citizens to get the vaccine. The vast majority will have to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity. Governor newsoms blue ribbon Vaccine Commission may ease some concerns. I would expect that review would be fairly quick and give another layer of certainty to the results that are have have been presented earlier today. Reporter on the embarcadero in San Francisco tonight, some of those skeptics. I dont trust this. Thats just and as i say, im not a person that likes to take medications anyways. Im going take it until i see what the result is from other people. But if i see the response is good, only then ill take it. Reporter as early as next month, front line workers could be getting the vaccine followed by seniors in retirement homes. But herd immunity depends on young people getting vaccinated. Health experts remind us there will be no vaccine available for months. They recommend we continue with mask and social distancing and skipping large thanksgiving gatherings. Thank you, terry. New details tonight about an athome covid19 test that can deliver results in 30 minutes. The test, developed by lucera. The fda approved the cost and it will cost 50. Yeah, i think that would be fantastic. Assuming its reliable. Personally, i wouldnt trust it. Reporter simply because . Because its not a professional administering it. And i would want a doctor. Now the tests are expected to be ready for people within the sutter medical system by the end of the year and the rest of the population by spring of 2021.
