Despite Pandemic, GM s Hourly UAW Workers Are Getting Larger Profit-Sharing Cheques Than In 2019

General Motors’ hourly UAW-represented employees could get as much as $9,000 in profit-sharing payments for their work in 2020. According to The Detroit News, GM said that 44,000 workers are eligible for that payment. Should the final, official tally match estimates, it will mean a roughly $1,000 larger payout than in 2019. The cheques are expected to be paid on the week of February 26 and are based on GM’s North American earnings. Profits in the region totaled $9 billion and, according to the UAW’s contract, autoworkers are entitled to roughly $1,000 per billion in profits for the company. “Despite a year of a pandemic and loss of production in 2020, General Motors reported a solid profit for North America,” UAW Vice President and Director of the General Motors Department, Terry Dittes, said in a statement. “This is a testament to our UAW-GM Membership, who produce some of the finest and most sought-after vehicles in the world, right here in the U.S.A.”

GM invests $93M at Romulus Powertrain plant to boost pickup production

General Motors is investing in two components plants to help boost its production of full-size pickups. The automaker said Thursday it will invest $93 million at its Romulus Powertrain plant and $7 million at its Bedford Casting Operations in Bedford, Indiana. The Romulus investment will add machining capability, while the Bedford investment will increase the plant’s die casting capabilities. Both investments will help GM boost production of the 10-speed automatic transmissions used in the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra light-duty, full-size pickups. GM builds its light-duty pickups at Fort Wayne Assembly in Indiana and Silao Assembly Plant in Mexico. The automaker assembles its heavy-duty pickups at Flint Assembly.
