“At a time when General Motors is asking for a significant investment by the U.S. government in subsidizing electric vehicles, this is a slap in the face for not only UAW members and their families but also for U.S. taxpayers and the American workforce, Terry Dittes, UAW vice president and director of the General Motors Department, said in response to the news.
Dittes believes that cars sold in the United States by American companies should be made by American workers. That is why our nation is investing in these companies, Dittes said. Taxpayer money should not go to companies that utilize labor outside the U.S. while benefiting from American government subsidies. This is not the America any of us signed on for. Frankly, it is unseemly.”
General Motors’ hourly UAW-represented employees could get as much as $9,000 in profit-sharing payments for their work in 2020.
According to The Detroit News, GM said that 44,000 workers are eligible for that payment. Should the final, official tally match estimates, it will mean a roughly $1,000 larger payout than in 2019.
The cheques are expected to be paid on the week of February 26 and are based on GM’s North American earnings. Profits in the region totaled $9 billion and, according to the UAW’s contract, autoworkers are entitled to roughly $1,000 per billion in profits for the company.
“Despite a year of a pandemic and loss of production in 2020, General Motors reported a solid profit for North America,” UAW Vice President and Director of the General Motors Department, Terry Dittes, said in a statement. “This is a testament to our UAW-GM Membership, who produce some of the finest and most sought-after vehicles in the world, right here in the U.S.A.”
