Share: General Motors (NYSE: GM) has generated an angry response in its hometown of Detroit to its $1-billion plan to build electric vehicles in Mexico. ¡Ay, Caramba! The company did not announce the news through its English-language communications channels, but instead dropped word via a Spanish-language press release from its Mexican subsidiary. The electric vehicles will be built at GM’s Ramos Arizpe production complex. The company plans to begin producing batteries and components for the electric vehicles later this year, with full vehicle production slated to start in 2023. Detroit Free Press General Motors has picked a fifth plant to build its 2023 electric vehicles and it is in Mexico, which the United Auto Workers union calls a slap in the face.   GM has already declared it will make EVs at four locations in the United States and Canada. But on Thursday, GM said it will invest more than $1 billion at its manufacturing complex in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, Mexico, for a new paint shop and innovative technology that will start operations in June 2021. In a statement, GM said part of the initial investment is to prepare the site for an expansion of the assembly and Global Propulsion Systems plants, to make Ramos Arizpe Complex the fifth GM manufacturing facility to produce electric vehicles.

General Motors announced the investment in the Arizpe Ramos Manufacturing Complex in a Spanish language press release on their GM Mexico website. The press release states that the goal is to make the plant the fifth GM manufacturing site in North America to produce electric vehicles. Both the Orion plant that the Factory Zero plant GM is building in Detroit are also included in those 5 plants.
