Before i begin today, though, id like to note a historical milestone. Today is the beginning of Lieutenant Governor Matt Michaels session as president of the senate and prior to that he presided forever four sessions as speaker of the house. Those 11 sessions make Matt Michaels the longest serving presiding officer the history of the south dakota state legislature. Lets recognize and thank him for that service. [applause] thank you very much. Over the past six years, we have undertaken many significant initiatives together and have made progress in many years. Is not the answer on discrimination. If my colleagues insist on more lawsuits, perhaps they should start their own background. According to 2014 opm study, the federal government has a substantial pay gap. The average woman along the gs makes 89 cents for every dollar earned by the average man and this gender gap can even be seen in the pay for staff working in the white house, which only pays women 87 , cents on every dollar owner earned by a man. The fact is women are smart. Women know what is best for them and their family. Many women want work balance in their life. They seek out careers that provide them opportunities. We should look at other ways we can help women besides this litigation piece. For example the working families stability act 2013 bill that would give flexibility for women to use their personal time in liue of overtime pay. Women tell us one of the things they need is more time rather than necessarily more money. Also, repealing the 30hour workweek for health care

Recognize this is an International Arms control agreement and not a very good one although there are some advantages, recognize the advantages as well. But its not a Friendship Treaty, and some people have tried to make it into a Friendship Treaty say its worthless. As a Friendship Treaty it would be worthless but its an arms control agreement that fell short of a lot of hopes but its not completely without some merit. We have allies out there. We have allies who want to rally to our side. I dont forget sitting with the king of jordan one day. We were working on his syrian refugee problem and i have seen refugees all around the world from the Southeast Asia to africa to the dalmatian coast. I have never seen i have been up in the refugee camps. I have never seen refugees as traumatized as those coming out of syria.
