When it comes to choosing which Bay Area films made by Black filmmakers are worth checking out, it’s unfortunately a very small list.
In fact, many of the Bay Area films that you think would be directed by Black filmmakers aren’t. “They Call Me Mister Tibbs!” (1970), where Sidney Poitier’s iconic cop from “In the Heat of the Night” moves to San Francisco? A white guy directed it. (The same goes for “The Organization,” another Tibbs installment from 1971.) The blaxploitation favorite “The Mack” (1973), where Max Julien’s enterprising pimp takes over the Oakland streets? Another white guy.
Black History Month Legend: Misty Copeland, Black Ballerina
My Black History Month Legend of the day is Misty Copeland, the first Black principal Ballerina at the American Ballet Theatre in its history. Can you believe this? It took them 75 whole a years to get to a Black principal ballerina. They got some real nerve.
Better late than never, I guess.
Anyway, let me tell you about the incredible Misty Copeland! When she first started taking ballet class as a young child, she was so amazing at doing all those pliés, pas de deux, and grand jetés, and whathaveyou, that she was selected to be Swanilda in the big ballet play, Coppélia. The Crown s Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin are among five of the show s castmembers to receive Critics Choice Awards nominations this year.
Olivia, 46, who plays Queen Elizabeth II in the hit Netflix show, has been nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series, putting her up against co-star Emma, 25, who won acclaim for her portrayal of the late Princess Diana.
With the show earning a nod for Best Drama Series, Josh O Connor (Prince Charles) received a Best Actor in a Drama Series nomination, while Tobias Menzies (Prince Philip) and Gillian Anderson (Margaret Thatcher) are up for supporting awards.
