Humidity brings out useful friends like snakes, skinks, turtles

Well, this isn’t what I signed up for. No one told me about this not the Chamber of Commerce, not any of the tourist brochures. You never see “Welcome to Tallahassee: we’ve got tapioca-puddin’ air in the summers and in the spring! Yeah!” You never see, “Welcome to Tallahassee: in a few months, you’ll be able to barbecue ribs on the sidewalk. Ain’t that special?”  So, yes, now we enter what is late spring for some, but summer for us, the Time of Dinosaurs in Tallahassee. Or, as I call them, “useful friends.” Maybe it doesn’t quite rival Jurassic Park, but between the five-lined skinks, the broad-headed skinks, and the green anoles, we’ve got a lot of miniature benign monsters out and about right now. Not to mention the black racers, corn snakes, and rat snakes.

New SustainaBiz program recognizes sustainability in energy, water

How does the program work? This voluntary program is free and provides businesses and organizations with an easy checklist to help determine their recognition level, technical assistance from the Leon County’s Sustainability Team, and connects recognized businesses with others in the community by creating a sustainable business network. There are several required criteria including an energy audit, utility and waste monitoring, and eliminating the use of polystyrene (Styrofoam) and plastic bags in operations. In order to be recognized, businesses and organizations must earn a minimum number of points across the sustainability topic areas of energy, water, transportation, waste reduction, employee and community engagement, local economy, and innovation.

Tallahassee couple wins Wildlife Conservation award for lifelong efforts

Stevenson and Tanaka know that the infrastructure that holds the land, water, air, and the earth’s living creatures in a delicate balancing act has begun to dangerously sway. It is what they offer to steady the environmental pyramid and to teach others to participate that has gleaned them recognition and praise. Reading through the letters of recommendation for the award, 80-year-old Jim Stevenson’s and Tara Tanaka’s plaudits include dozens of laudatory letters from conservation organizations across Florida. One could believe they are a compilation of the accolades of three or four people, not just two: The Florida Wildlife Federation, The Wakulla Springs Alliance, Tall Timbers Research Station & Land Conservancy, Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservancy, Apalachee Land Conservancy, National Wildlife Federation, Coastal Plains Institute and Land Conservancy, Florida Springs Institute, and the Apalachee Audubon Society all speak with high gratitude for their efforts.

Return of King Seiko: Meet the new SJE083

To mark its 140th anniversary in 2021, Seiko will introduce a re-issue of King Seiko, a mechanical timepiece it made in the mid-1960s and known mostly to watch aficionados now. This new watch, Ref. SJE083, pays homage to a second series model called the King Seiko KSK. However, to understand the significance of this watch, one will need to go back to a time when Seiko was eager to establish itself as a credible alternative to Swiss timepieces in post-War Japan. The original King Seiko KSK model from 1965 Image Credit: Supplied In their quest to make mechanical watches with high accuracy in the late 1950’s, Seiko encouraged competition between its two factories – Suwa Seikosha in Nagano prefecture and Daini Seikosha (daini is Japanese for second) in Kameido, Tokyo. The aim was to promote competition and consequently enhance the offerings that the umbrella Seiko brand could offer. Each factory worked independent of each other and even had their own logo o
